A recurring look at what's happening at Shanghai's art galleries:
Social Emotion
This
vibrant group exhibition of installation and video showcases works from
some of China's best contemporary artists, including esteemed
Guangzhou-born video artist Cao Fei and Beijing's most outlandish video
performance artist Chen Tianzhuo, both of whom are known for
forward-thinking work with an experimental edge. Highly recommended.
Until Aug 27, CC Foundation (Rm. 101, Bld. 15, No. 50) at M50.
Soft Power
Four female artists display their take on womanhood in this group show. All four artists from Hong Kong and the Mainland deal in abstract paintings that explore ideas of mythology and philosophy.
Until Sep 23, Leo Gallery.
A Most Filial Imprint
This
conceptual group show explores the ways in which artists are
“imprinted” and forever effected by the artwork they create. Works
include gothic, mythology-based sculptures by Macanese artist Heidi Lau
and the experimental works of New York-based artist Sydney Shen, who has
apparently created “candles engineered to smell like her pet
tarantula.” Cool.
Until Aug 27, Aike-Dellarco (West Bund).
I Do (Not) Want to Be Part of Your Celebration
This group show from the always-interesting Qiao Space explores the problems that can arise by pigeonholing an artist based on their gender, race, age or nationality. Highlights include Liu Wa’s “Selfie Series” and Zhu Tian’s somewhat self-explanatory performance art piece, “Cling to a Curator.”
Until Aug 27, Qiao Space.
Math Bass: Serpentine Door
LA-based artist Math Bass brings over her crisp and stylized canvas paintings for her first solo show in China at Yuz Project Room, a smaller section of Yuz Museum that focuses on less established artists. Much of the works are from her ‘Newz!’ series critiquing media and communication.
Until Aug 27, Yuz Museum.
Celebrating Habitat - The Real, The Virtual & The Imaginary
Power Station hosts this innovative solo exhibit from acclaimed Indian architect and urban planner Balkrishna Doshi. The show offers a selection of works from his 62-year career, including public housing, educational institutions and furniture design, all of which are vibrant and experimental.
Until Oct 29, Power Station of Art.
