Mar 20: Comedy Club Mondays
Hu Bar and Lounge kicks off its new comedy night with Shanghai based stand-ups Colin Hanna, Patrick Lozada, Evan Danger, Barney Rivera and Erin FM. Entry includes free flow on selected drinks and Madame Hu’s sharing latter.

Mar 20-22: Shanghai International Literary Festival
The
undisputed literary event champion of Shanghai is back! Every creed of

Mar 20-21 & 25: Mike Watt
The
esteemed bassist is beloved for broadening the sound of hardcore as a
member of The Minutemen. His solo debut famously featured numerous
guests including members of Pearl Jam, Nirvana, The Beastie Boys and
much more. Watt has since gone on to be a member of the reformed The
Stooges, while continuing to be an indie icon for his work with younger
acts including Japanese buzz band, Lite.

Sell
or stock up on clothes, toys, books, strollers and other family goods
at this twice-a-year market organized by Shanghai mothers. Sellers will
donate 15 percent of all their profit to Heart to Heart.

Mar 21-22: Cuong Vu Trio
Praised
by Pat Metheny as “one of the best bands I’ve ever heard,” the trio has
been lauded as one of the leaders of postmillennial jazz. The
Saigon-born trumpeter Cuong Vu has been praised by the New York Times for his “dreamlike sound informed by post-bop but just as rooted in noise pop, grunge and ambient minimalism.”

More than 70 emerging and established take over Shanghai Centre to show off their new spring collections. Stock up for Springe and peruse through a curated selection of clothing, accessories, jewelry, kids items and more.

Mar 24: Kong: Skull Island
The Wanda-owned Legendary Entertainment studios reboots King Kong for the second chapter of their ambitious MonsterVerse. While he’s already scheduled for an epic fight in 2020’s Godzilla vs. Kong, viewers will get their first glimpse of the updated colossal ape in Kong: Skull Island. Tom Hiddleston (Thor),
John Goodman and Samuel L. Jackson star as members of the shadowy
government organization, Monarch, who discover a mysterious island full
of apex predators. Academy Award winner Brie Larson (Room) co-stars as a war photojournalist who joins the dangerous expedition to investigate further.
Mar 24: Smash Opening
The China Social Club crew are opening this new Dingxi Lu spot that’s focused on top quality bookings from local crews and international acts. Their opening night features sets from Lindberg and Tobias Patrick. Get there early as the first keg is free.

Mar 24: South China Morning Blues Reading
Author Ray Hecht reads from his acclaimed novel that explores the relationships between expats and locals down in the hypermodern south.

Mar 24: Jane Eyre
Shanghai
Ballet presents a one-night only performance of their innovative take
on Charlotte Brontë’s classic novel. This modern interpretation shifts
the story’s focus to Bertha, the much put-upon wife of Mr. Rochester.

Mar 24: Neva
Guillermo Calderón’s play explores the relationship between theater and politics. This savage story follows Anton Chekov’s widow, Olga Knipper as she rehearses with two other actors, as unseen striking workers are being gunned down in the streets outside by the Tsarist regime. Awesta Zarif directs, while Natasha Portwood, Jenni Taylor and Archibald McColl IV star.

Mar 24: The Fallacy
The
Henan-based post-punk trio bring their extensive national tour to
Yuyintang as they prep their third album for Modern Sky, which follows

Mar 24: Trus’me
Beijing
promoters Bye Bye Disco travel south to take over Elevator with help
from the Manchester house and techno don. As label head of Prime
Numbers, Trus’me continues his hometown’s electronic legacy with diverse
productions and eclectic DJ sets. Heavy hitters Juan Atkins, Gilles
Peteson, Dam Funk and LCD Soundsystem count themselves as fans.

Mar 24-25: Dwayne Perkins
The affable comic returns to Shanghai for a last-minute booking. A correspondent for Jay Leno and a Conan regular, Perkins won wide acclaim for last year’s Netflix special, Take Note.

Mar 24-25: Professor E's Museum of Time
Qi-Pow! Burlesque presents the misadventures of Professor E and his band of time traveling cabaret misfits. Expect to be dazzled by aerial artists, circus performers, dancers and drag divas.

Mar 24-27 and 30: Wuthering Heights
After bringing The Jungle Book and Sherlock Holmes and the Hounds of Baskervilles
on China tours last year, acclaimed UK theater group Chapterhouse
Theater returns with their highly praised stage adaption of Emily
Bronte's classic, Wuthering Heights, which stops off at Shanghai Grand Theatre.

Mar 25: Shanghai Bakery x EGG Weekend Brunch
This sweet collaboration features Ox from Shanghai Bakery helping design four special brunch box combos, each featuring a main, side and signature dish for RMB88.

Mar 25: Subs
Led by fierce front woman Kang Mao, the Beijing punk group are a part of Chinese indie lore thanks to classic albums like Down and Queen of Fucking Everything.
While their recent singles showcase a more melodic indie side, expect
the trio to tap into their feral side that’s made them one of the
country’s most acclaimed live acts.
