Well here's a bit of good news during the high-crime times.
Shanghai police are reporting that robberies and frauds are down by 15 percent more than they were during this same time last year, while arrests are up four percent.
Additional plainclothes officers have been added into shopping centers, including high tourist areas such as Nanjing Lu, to keep an eye out for pickpockets.
Along with minor theft, Shanghai police have gone as far as Chongqing City to arrest a woman who stole RMB30,000 from a Shanghai highrise, and have also arrested five others who were defrauding people with promises of new cars using that oldie-but-a-goodie tea scam to swindle them at leisure.
That said, it's always wise to exercise precaution, especially in unfamiliar, or highly touristy areas. Stay safe over the holiday!
