Oct 17-18: Batsheva Dance Company
Founded by the acclaimed Israeli contemporary dancer Ohad Naharin, the Batsheva Dance Company has won wide praise for their mesmerizing and inventive mix of traditional and modern dance. They bring their show Decadece to the recently opened Shanghai International Dance Center as part of the Shanghai International Arts Festival.

Oct 17-19: Shanghai Fashion Week
The twice-a-year celebration of all things fashion returns to Shanghai on Oct 12-19 with dozens of labels participating in the weeklong festivities. Museum of Friendship (pictured above), C.J. Yao, Ji Cheng, Jarel Zhang and more will be showing off their Spring/Summer 2017 collections in a series of catwalk shows, presentations, exhibitions, trade shows, talks and parties across the city. Oct 17-22: Oktoberfest
While its Feyang Lu location may have closed, Paulaner Bräuhaus will be bringing its famed Oktoberfest celebrations to its largest location, Paulaner @ Expo. This supersized edition goes on for 10 days mixing traditional Bavarian dishes with Oktoberfest beer brewed in Paulaner’s microbrewery that is only available during the festival. Renowned nine-piece band Die Kirchdorfer will rock the house and there will be a cozy beer garden to add to the authentic German vibes. Special three-course set menus with free-flow Paulaner beer will be available for groups of six or more for RMB388 (RMB288 from Tues-Thurs and RMB248 from Sun-Mon) with at least 24 hour advanced reservations. A la carte menu is also available.

Oct 17-23: The Dreamer
To mark the 400th Anniversary of two renowned literary masters’ deaths – Shakespeare and Chinese legend Tang Xianzu – the award-winning British physical theatre company Gecko has teamed up with Shanghai Dramatic Art Centre to present the experimental play, The Dreamer. The joint effort mixes in A Midsummer Night’s Dream with Peony Pavillion, two works that prevailed in the same era yet in different countries, for a completely new cross-cultural experience. Oct 18: Julia Fischer
A Gramophone Award winner for Artist of the Year, the famed German violinist was catapulted to fame as an 11-year-old after winning the Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition. She’s since collaborated with the world’s most celebrated orchestras while receiving constant critical acclaim for her live performances and records.

Oct 18-25: The Mariinsky
The world-famous ballet and opera theater sets up shop at Shanghai Grand Theatre for a trio of shows that highlight its diversity and excellence. On October 18 and 20, they perform Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s opera The Queen of Spades, which debuted in 1890. On October 19 and 21, musical director Valery Gergiev conducts the Mariinsky Orchestra, showcasing the skills that led to his winning the prestigious Herbert von Karajan Conducting Competition while still a student. Dance fans won’t want to miss the iconic Mariinsky Ballet’s rendition of Romeo and Juliet on October 24 and 25. Choreographed by Leonid Lavrovsky, it was the first full adaptation of composer Sergei Prokofiev’s version, which premiered in 1940 and remains a Mariinsky staple.

Oct 19-22: Bar Rouge Anniversary
The Bund institution celebrates its 12th birthday in typical extravagant fashion with six parties going down from October 14-15 and 19-22. This year has a Fun Fair theme and they’re promising acrobatics, a paradise of sweets for the girls and a wild triumphant time.

Signed to Fool’s Gold, the Atlanta hip hop producer rocks Arkham to toast the first anniversary of Preme.

Oct 20-22: Monte-Carlo Ballet
Established in 1985 by the Princess of Hanover, the Monte-Carlo Ballet continues Monaco dance traditions under the iconic choreographer Jean-Christophe Maillot. Eleven years after its premiere, her adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Le Songe, has a three-night engagement at Shanghai Culture Square.

Oct 21: Jack Reacher: Never Go Back
Tom Cruise returns as the former US Army officer who is being sent back to the headquarters of his old military unit. There, he must crack the case of whether he can trust Major Susan Turner (Cobie Smulders) - who he has been helping Reacher solve cases across the country but is now accused of espionage. Cruise has been seen touring across China as the film scored a coveted same day global release.
Oct 21: Mechanic - Resurrection
Five years after the original, Jason Statham returns as the professional assassin Arthur Bishop who had been living quietly in Rio after faking his death. However, a mysterious woman tracks him down sending him to Thailand where he is then recruited to erase three targets in Malaysia, Australia and Bulgaria.
Oct 21: Cabaret Broadway
Dreamweaver Productions (formerly Urban Aphrodite) debuts their monthly Broadway cabaret series featuring the city’s top singers like Awesta Zarif (pictured), Anna Doherty, Amahl Zamir and Anna Whiteson performing classic show hits. Musical theater afficianado Christian Walker hosts while Shawn Wang plays piano. Tickets available through That’s by scanning the QR code.

Oct 21: The Best of James Bond
The always dapper, Sinatra-loving Lord of The Pearl, Frank Bray salutes the world’s most famous secret agent in his latest tribute concert. Antonio Ximenez directs the singer backed by The Pearl Big Band as they run through all of the classics from the James Bond series in this 007 themed concert.

Oct 21: Pinball City + Loudspeaker
Harley’s gets hardcore as it welcomes the ferocious duo of homegrown hard rockers Pinball City and The Loudspeaker. Adding some eclecticism to the night is the South American dance infused dirty punk band Hogchocker and Swedish-Chilean singer-songwriter Matz Anderson.

The Berlin-based brothers are known mixing machine driven funk and techno with timeless house for a soulful sound that’s impossible not to dance to.

For their latest party, Footprints brings in the acclaimed DJ and producer known for fusing “deep raw and energetic electronics” for a tense strain of techno. He’s founded the acclaimed Kawl label while remixing genre leading lights like Orlando Voorn and Mike Dehnert. Hu Yang, Jackie and Will A support with visuals from VJ Ryo.

Oct 21: TKDJS
The New York trio have scored hits like ‘Don’t Leave’ and ‘Rolling’ that showcase their unique take on all the different flavors of house. They’ve teamed with Ariana Grande on their pop-house remix of ‘Problem’ and have already scored over 10 million plays on Hype Machine thanks to their remixes of Alex Newell, Blonde and Basement Jaxx.

Oct 21-22: Wellington College Festival of Education
Wellington College hosts experts in education from all over the world as they lead workshops and take part in panel discussions designed to stimulate thinking about education. In addition to being inspired, the festival is a good chance to meet other educationalists, teachers, students and parents.

Oct 21-22: Kyle Grooms
Kung Fu Komedy welcomes the New Jersey-born comedian who has appeared on Chappelle’s Show and Inside Amy Schumer. A rising force in New York’s comedy scene, Grooms has been featured on Last Comic Standing and has rocked the house at legendary comedy clubs like Caroline’s with his honest and unique look at his life experiences growing up in the American melting pot.

Known for their colorful community festivals, Kick the Gong Around presents an international carnival at Kerry Parkside full of multicultural performances, carnival games and plenty of pop-ups. Performers include Tribes of Asaph, The Psyders, DJ Cavia and the famed Nansady Keita

Oct 22: Run For Your Lives Shanghai
The world’s most thrilling run comes to Shanghai with participants choosing whether they want to be zombies or survivors. Already over 15,000 players have taken part in this global race that features memorable obstacles and a chance to literally run for your life. Taking place over eight hours, participants will report and play during different time slots with an after-party for everyone involved as reward for all the hard work. Oct 22: Bubba's 11th Annual Chili Cook Off
It’s an end of an era, as Bubba’s famed annual Chili Cook Off returns to its original home, Bubba’s Hongqiao one last time before the building is reclaimed by the military. 15 teams will compete for the title of Shanghai’s best chili. There will be plenty of live music and a ton of drinks with each guest receiving one vote ticket.

Oct 22: Streets Kill Strange Animals
Emerging out of Nanjing, the noise-rock trio is now one of the most celebrated indie acts in the Beijing scene. They’re hitting the road for their longest tour yet, stopping off at On Stage on Oct 22 to support their sophomore disc, McDonalds Kids, which is being released on Modern Sky. We chat with frontman Leng Mei about their dirtier sound, their newfound direct approach and why Streets Kill Strange Animals are for the kids. A resident at Berlin’s famed Janus parties, Lotic was recently featured in Bjork’s sit-down for Rinse FM and for his Berlin-via-Houston debut Heterocetera. He brings his mix of woozy hip hop rhythms and gut busting bass as headliner of the latest 云CLOUD party.

Oct 23: Roy Jones Jr. Boxing Masterclass
As the first man in 106 years to move up five weight classes from middleweight to heavyweight and win the coveted the Heavyweight World Championship, Roy Jones Jr. has to be included in the conversation for best pound-for-pound boxer of all time. He’s sharing the knowledge that made him a legend with a one-and-a-half hour masterclass at Golden Gloves Boxing Gym, followed by a half hour Q&A session. Space is limited to 20 and attendees will also receive signed gloves, a signed t-shirt and a framed photo of the man himself.

From hardcore Trekkies to new fans enamored with J.J. Abrams’ recent reboot, the history of the iconic sci-fi franchise is celebrated in this massive exhibition. Hop aboard the bridge of the Starship enterprise and put yourself in the seat of Captain Kirk, Picard and all the others. Star Trek: The Exhibition features sets, costumes, props and other museum pieces from all five related television series and 11 feature films. Family passes for two adults and one child under 1.4m available on weekdays for RMB130 and weekends for RMB180.
