Salva began his music career as a genre floater, merging various sounds but never sticking to one thing. As his infectious beats made rounds in the electronic music circuit, Salva quickly became known as a master of heavy bass.
Salva is a Red Bull Music Academy alumni and part of BBC’s prestigious collective In New DJs We Trust. These days, he’s got his bass fingers heavily dipping into trap and hip-hop, putting out tracks with the likes of Young Thug, Schoolboy Q, and A$AP Ferg. We caught up with Salva before his much anticipated debut set at Arkham on June 4.
You started out quite experimental, dipping your fingers into all sorts of genres. Do you think you’ve narrowed your sound since then?
I think the more pop styles of mine just naturally get more play. But on the contrary, see the track "A.D.D." on my soundcloud with Mr Carmack that I put up a couple months back - thats pure experimental club banger shit. Also Boys Noize Records' recent Miami Noize compilation, or Jubilee's Magic City 2 comp for some recent songs of mine more experimental-leaning.
What’s your biggest pet peeve about the music industry right now?
There's no science to a lot of it, it's mostly politics. But that’s every commercial industry.
What’s your favorite part about living in Los Angeles?
Aside from the weather, there are more pro recording studios and sessions happening here than anywhere else in the world. I get blessed to be in the room with some very talented people either passing through or living here.
Your music is pretty club oriented, so I don’t suspect that’s what you play on a casual morning. What kind of music do you listen to on your down time?
I usually get fixated on a classic band or producer, vocalist, etc., and listen through all their stuff that I haven't before. Recently Phil Collins, Prince, Beach Boys, The Cure, Stevie, Marvin, etc. I love digging back into their albums and studying all the things I missed.
Have you been to Shanghai before? If so, what did you think? If not, what do you expect?
I've never been I'm so excited! Can't wait to eat some good food!
Mr. Carmack just played in Shanghai a few weeks earlier, and you guys have worked together in the past. How did this relationship come about?
He used to be roommates with one of my best friends - producer named B. Bravo, so we all started hanging at my studio. I made like five or six joints with Mr Carmack. We’re thinking about doing a group together.
Do you have any crazy DJ stories?
Many. A recent wild one was last year at Coachella. I was playing an after party with Brodinksi, and Kanye came out and did 'All Day' like 7 times to a crowd of like 300 people in a warehouse at 4am.
Best and worst part about being Salva?
I'm stuck being Salva, its my family name. So I guess I have to make it really mean something (laughs).
