Shanghai Food & Drink Gossip: June 2016

Hold up, is it really time for June Goss already? Guess it must be so because it's restaurant openin' season. And there are. So. Many.

First up: Pelikan, a new restaurant from Craig Willis (Bang, Henkes, Mr. Willis) focusing on Nordic cuisine, cooked by very handsome Danish chef, Kasper Elmholdt Pedersen. May we also say that we're having serious envy over these cool interiors. Note the custom tropical wallpaper.

The Nordic vibes continue over at Jiangsu Lu with The Nest's brand new little sister, The Cannery, due to open next month. Laoban Mark Klingspon tells us the concept, inspired by the food culture from Klingspon's own hometown of Vancouver, focuses on housemade artisanal canned produce and will have "the largest selection of Canadian whisky and Rye in China." Fighting words indeed.

That's lucky, because the other restaurant in Shanghai that serves delicious artisanal canned food is closing. Yes, it's true, dearly beloved Pirata is out by the end of the month *wipes tear*. One of the most original restaurants to grace Shanghai in recent years, head chef Ling Huang tells us they're looking for a new location in the same area.

More sad news: by the time you're reading this, Xixi Bedroom and Xixi Bistro will be closed. Licensed to thrill customers, but sadly not licensed to open a restaurant.

Belgian import Mr Waffle have just opened their first brick and mortar shop in Shanghai on Xing'an and Yandang Lu, though you can still get them delivered straight to your house/office too. We're particularly fond of them drizzled with chocolate and powdered sugar.

Over in West Jing'anderos, a new outpost of Hunter Gatherer awaits healthy eaters. As sizeable as HG's other two shops, the new Jing'an branch boasts plenty of seating for those wishing to dine in.

Hunter Gatherer Jing'an The folks from Gemma have also unveiled a new concept, Bar Centrale, which promises to be an Italian bakery, pizzeria and bar with a rooftop, serving customers from morning to night.

Also on that stretch is an enormous new branch of Fat Cow, which like its sibling in Minhang, serves bumper-sized burgers, steaks, ice cream sundaes et al.

On Wuding and Jiaozhou we have Salotto G, an Italian kitchen, bar and 'mart' serving cicchetti (basically fun-sized Italian food) on the first floor, private dining on the second and a rooftop terrace up top.

Now we don't need to treck out to Hongqiao to get LA Pho anymore, thanks to their new shop in K11. Pho-cking brilliant news if you ask us. We've tried the new branch and it's just as good as the other one.

Also, NBD but Austin Hu is back with a new delicatessen called Madison Kitchen. Hu tells us he'll be serving up ker-azy sandwiches with all housemade ingredients. There'll be one called 'The Big Girl,' with pastrami ham, sausage pattty, melted Gruyère, sauerkraut and spicy Russian dressing, and another dubbed the 'Gentleman Caller,' with rare roast beef, horseradish cream, Stilton, watercress and tomato. One gentleman who can call on us anytime...

Meanwhile in Bundland, a new restaurant called Stockholm on the Bund has opened, serving up Nordic-inspired cocktails, seafood and sharing plates. Watch this space for our forthcoming review.

In addition to The Hop Project, Yongkang Lu has welcomed a new Indian restaurant and bar called The Indian Curry Co. Like our beloved Rangoli, they're pushing an RMB88 buffet and wallet-friendy lunch sets from RMB48.

Popular wine delivery app, BottlesXO, is launching their own bar, XO, on Hengshan Lu on June 2, which will showcase the various vintages available on their app, from RMB25/glass. They're teaming up with Italian restaurant Solo to provide wine and food pairings.

Oh, and the Michelin Guide is coming to China in September.

That's all for now, folks! Come back next month for another hot, juicy slab of gossip.
