Lovers of antiquity rejoice! The Shanghai Museum is set to open a second venue in the Pudong New Area in 2020, conveniently located near the Science and Technology Museum.
The institution's curator Yang Zhigang announced that the second Shanghai Museum will be twice the size of its People's Square location, encompassing 80,000 square feet, as reported by Shanghai Daily.
The two museums will strive to complement one another. Yang explained that the new Pudong site will host all things artsy - including paintings and calligraphy, while the Puxi location will focus on bronze and ceramics.
The current Shanghai Museum is celebrating its 20th anniversary and receives around 2 million visitors per year. However, once the new museum opens, the current site will close for an undisclosed period of time to undergo a series of extensive refurbishments.
“It has long been in need of a face-lift and will undergo a program of repairs later this year, though that won’t affect its normal operations,” Yang told reporters.
