Shanghai’s subway operator is considering an online “rogue’s gallery” of fare dodgers who they fail to catch and punish on the spot, reports the Shanghai Daily.

Under current rules, passengers attempting to score a free ride on the city’s subway system can be fined up to five times the cost of their journey.

“Nobody likes fare dodgers, but it seems excessive to name and shame them,” cautioned a lawyer who spoke to the Daily.

However, the punishment-via-shaming proposal is apparently a popular idea among some quarters; a poll conducted via the Shanghai government’s WeChat account garnered support from 80 percent of respondents. But you have to wonder about the kind of person who voluntarily subscribes to receive messages from Shanghai authorities...
