A recurring look at what's happening at Shanghai's art galleries:

1. 15 Rooms

201509/15rooms1.jpgThis performance art exhibition is curated by MoMA PS1’s director Klaus Biesenbach and London’s Serpentine Gallery co-director Hans Ulrich Obrist. What debuted in Sydney as 12 Rooms has travelled around the world, adding pieces. For 15 Rooms, 15 big-name Chinese and international artists will be given one room in an environment desgined by Herzong & de Meuron, providing a unique, immersive and intimate art experience. Marian Abramovic, Cao Fei and Allora & Calzadilla are among the big name participants.

// Sep 25-Dec 6, RMB50. Long Museum (West Bund).

2. Zhou Fan: Mute

The Yunnan contemporary artist uses traditional Chinese ink painting as his base to create illuminating works that explore the co-existence between mankind and nature – a tenet of Chinese ancient philosophy.

// Until Oct 15. Noeli Gallery, see event listing.

5. Garden of Forking Paths

201509/gardenofforkingpaths.jpg

Taking its name from a Jorge Luis Borges’ short story, this group exhibition features 15 artists exploring the interplay of the space/time structure. Artists representing different generations are given a partition to display their works, creating a labyrinth-like garden space.

// Until Nov 15. Shanghai Gallery of Art.

6. Liu Dao: Noir Blanc

201509/liudaonoirblanc.jpg

Known for their signature cheeky LED works like the one pictured above, the Liu Dao collective are shaking things up with their first photography only show. Expect classic black and white photography that is unapologetically wired into modernity.

// Until Nov 17. island 6 Art Center, see event listing.
