New Restaurants

It’s far from confirmed, but rumor has it Alvin Leung’s Michelin three star Hong Kong restaurant Bo Innovation is coming to Shanghai, and will be situated in Bund 5 next door to Jean Georges at Three on the Bund. This won't be Leung's first foray into Shanghai, he's previously partnered with healthy eating chain Remedy 365

Meanwhile, home-style Mexican kitchen La Coyota just got a new shop at 371 Jianguo Xi Lu, by Taiyuan Lu. It’s next to Pocho Social Club bar, and is a welcome permanent home for cook Gabriela Fernandez’s traditional and vibrant Mexican dishes.

For steak lovers, there’s now a new branch of Outback Steakhouse at Soho Plaza near Xintiandi. If you go, make sure to check the infamous ‘bloomin’ onion,’ AKA America’s most calorific dish (up to 3000 calories!) Might want to share that one with at least six friends…

In healthier news, Lindsay Fine’s vegan/vegetarian pop up Happy Buddha finally has a permanent home at 259 Jiashan Lu, by Jianguo Xi Lu. Expect a range of healthy alternatives such as vegan mac ‘n’ cheese and double layer nachos. Enough to convert meat lovers like us (for a day).

A new waffle and coffee shop, Mashe’s, has opened slap bang on the corner of Xinzha and Shanxi Bei Lu. While the waffles are just so-so, the coffee here is genuinely good. Try the delicious Mendheling blend (RMB28); so smooth it doesn’t need milk.

The biggest drink related news of the month is that The Shelter, that alternative electro dance club set in a war bunker, is set to close for renovations. The management has ominously hinted at some ‘special new changes’ to come with the club’s new look. Anyhow, they'll be back in business by September 17. You have until August 9 to enjoy the club as it is.

Rick Starr, former mixologist of Light & Salt’s Library Distillery, has now started his tenure at Jason Atherton’s two restaurants Commune Social and Table No.1. Rick tells us he has very grand designs in the pipeline, with a new line of “Mediterranean-inspired odes to classic cocktails” and some specially branded ingredients. Keep an eye out for them next month.

A new Canadian bar-cum-bistro called Fresh Maple has opened at 1315 Fuxing Zhong Lu by Xiangyang Bei Lu. Inside is a fully stocked bar and a surprisingly comprehensive menu of fresh seafood, including king crab, lobster and oysters.

Loungers – there be a new lounge bar at 895 Julu Lu (by Changshu Lu) called La Moda. It looks pretty swish inside, with brushed gold accents, Chesterfield couches and – wait for it – five different colors of toilet paper in the bathroom! Stay tuned for our review next month. Of the drinks, not the toilet paper.
