June 1-4: Steve Schneider
The principal bartender behind New York City’s popular cocktail bar Employees Only is rolling through Shanghai as part of Bacardi’s guest bartending campaign. June 1-7: Shanghai Beer Week
It’s heaven for craft beer lovers as breweries from around the world descend onto Shanghai. Things cap off at this weekend’s Hongqiao Craft Beer Festival (see details below) but there’s plenty of fun one-offs all week. Dr. Beer is giving brewery tours on June 1-2, UK’s Samuel Smith is doing a tasting at Kaiba Taphouse on June 1 from 6.30-10.15pm, Liquid Laundry is hosting a Brewmaster’s Dinner on June 2 and welcoming Kansas City's Boulevard Brewing Company on June 4, Hongqiao Boxing Cat Brewery is rolling out the first barrel beer tasting for its Bourbon Aged King Louie Imperial Stout and Farmhouse IPA on June 3, Great Leap Brewing holds court at Kaiba Tap House on Jianguo Zhong Lu on June 4 and Beijing’s Jing A takes over The Rooster all day on June 5. June 2: San Andreas
It’s been a while since Dwayne Johnson won the public’s heart as wrestling superstar The Rock, but he remains the People’s Champion. His Fast 7 just toppled Transformers: Age of Extinction to become the highest-grossing film in China, earning around USD320 million in a few weeks. His onslaught on the nation’s cineplexes continues in this big-budget action-adventure disaster film. When a devastating earthquake strikes California, rescue-helicopter pilot Chief Ray Gaines (Johnson) and his ex-wife (American Gangster’s Carla Gugino) attempt to escape Los Angeles and head to San Francisco to rescue their estranged daughter (True Detective’s Alexandra Daddario).
June 2-14: Ghost: The Musical
West End rising star Liam Doyle teams up with X-Factor stand-out Lucie Jones for this Tony Award nominated adaptation of the classic romantic film.

June 3: Laidback Luke
Shanghai’s EDM mega-fest STORM is returning on October 3 and they’re kicking off the celebrations with this pre-party. Headlining is the award-winning house DJ who has worked with luminaries like David Guetta, Sebastian Ingrosso, Axwell and Junior Sanchez. Joining the fun are hometown heroes Om, Cavia and Styline. It’s a free party, but reservations are required.

Urban Aphrodite revives their hit adaptation of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival favorite. Three madmen will attempt to cram in all of Shakespeare’s comedies, histories and tragedies in 90-minutes. It's a new cast, but for more, check out our feature on The Complete Works of Shakespeare (Abridged). The Friday night show will be a special drunk one with audiences able to chip in to get the actors drunk while they perform. For anyone interested in getting involved with Urban Aphrodite, they are holding city-wide auditions on June 6-7. Aspiring actors, singers and dancers will have their chance to land a part in upcoming productions of The Princess Bride, Dancing at Lughnasa, The 39 Steps and a Broadway Music Review. June 5: Dr. Sketchy’s

June 5: Root Soul & Shuya Okino

June 5: Air Max ‘97!

June 5-6: Quinn Dahle
The Los Angeles-based comic has wowed The Tonight Show with his clean wit and has worked with the likes of Robin Williams. He's developing a sitcom based on his life with his Mexican-American in-laws that’s being produced by Everybody Loves Raymond’s Brad Garrett, but is taking a quick break for his first trip to China. Admitting he knows little of the country, he tells us that he’s “hoping to see the Eiffel Tower, and maybe the Taj Mahal.” Stay tuned for the full interview. June 6: River of Hearts Sorting Party
For a dozen years, River of Hearts has been the outreach program of the Community Center Shanghai. Shanghai's favorite black tie boxing bloodbath returns for another round on June 6 at the Kerry Hotel Pudong. June 6: Porter Robinson
The 23-year-old producer and DJ won this year’s MTVu Artist of the Year. As a teenager, he signed to Skrillex’s OWSLA label
and topped Beatport several times with bombastic tracks like ‘Language’. However, he’s toned down the big beats for his debut album Words. June 6-7: Hongqiao Craft Beer Festival
The Sinan Mansions Craft Beer Festival has moved to Hongqiao this year, near L’Avenue Mall. Beer vendors across China like Beijing’s Great Leap Brewing and Shanghai’s The Brew team up with international brewers like Japan’s Baird for a celebration of craft beer. Vendors like Madison, the Commune Social and Pirata will be serving up gourmet appetizers while Gre3n Coconut Water will run a game area.

June 7: Healing Arts Festival

June 9-21: Refracted Shadow
Shanghai Opera House veteran Zoe Jiang directs this show that forgoes stage lighting for a mixture of handheld lights and shadow. The effects add to its story following the travails of love and life in the city.

June 10: Jurassic World
People’s number two sexiest man alive Chris Pratt follows up his massively successful turn in Guardians of the Galaxy with this reboot of the Jurassic Park series. Taking place 22 years after the events of the first film, Pratt stars as a velociraptor trainer on a functioning dinosaur theme park. In an effort to boost attendance, geneticists introduce the hybrid Indominus Rex dinosaur, created from the DNA of Giganotosaurus, Rugops, Majungasaurus and Carnotaurus. Things predictably go awry, as she escapes and embarks on a deadly rampage. Bryce Dallas Howard (Terminator: Salvation) stars as the park’s operations manager, whose nephews happen to be visiting.
June 11: Nervo
The Australian twin sisters have penned hits for the likes of David Guetta and Kelly Rowland, while forging their own path producing infectious EDM bangers.

June 12: Chui Wan

With a name that references ancient Taoist philosopher Zhuangzi, it’s little surprise that this Beijing quarter specializes in heady neo-psychedelia. They’re signed to Maybe Mars and just completed their first North American tour, winning raves at the Austin Psych-Fest where they shared the bill with genre standouts like Tame Impala and Flaming Lips. They’re bringing their national tour to Yuyintang to celebrate their new and stunning sophomore album (available to stream and purchase here). June 12-21: ShanghaiPRIDE
The Mainland’s largest and longest-running Pride festival returns for its seventh year. Things technically kick off on June 5 with the Rainbow Bike Ride but really gets going with with the opening Pride Run and Pink BBQ on June 13. There’s plenty of fine arts programming including the inaugural Shanghai Pride Film Festival (ShPFF) and shows from Urban Aphrodite and East West Theatre. In addition to panel discussions exploring LGBTQ parties, there will be a Professional Women’s Networking Event on June 18. Of course, it can’t be pride without the parties. Expect blowouts for the opening party on June 13 and the closing party on June 20. June 13: Shanghai Young Bakers
Learn how to bake baguettes and wholemeal raisin bread from the talented young chefs of this long-running organization. All proceeds will go to their program, which provides one year of free French baking training to disadvantaged Chinese youth.

June 13: Tea on the Great Wall
Patrice Luce Chapman grew up in a house designed by Hudec and frequented Victor Sassoon’s fancy dress parties. She also witnessed the rise of the Japanese in Shanghai and has crafted this illuminating memoir of old Shanghai. She’ll be joining this book launch via Skype from her home in Texas.

June 14: Hamlet
It’s been a decade since Britain’s TNT Theatre first brought their first show to the Mainland. Now they’re stage staples with founder receiving an MBE in 2013 for his efforts bringing the UK arts to the Mainland. They’re back once again with their award-winning adaptation of Hamlet. June 16: Who Killed Captain Alex?
For over a decade, Wakaliwood has been the leading purveyor of Ugandan action films. Emerging out of the Wakaliga slum, Mr. Isaac and the Ramon Film Productions crew have crafted crazy, hilarious and over-the-top violent action films on budgets of less than USD200. Now they’re teaming up with Sub-Cinema for the Asian debut of Uganda’s first action movie, Who Killed Captain Alex? Unreleased trailers and clips from their other work will also be shown. Better yet, they want you to be involved in one of their future hits by dying on screen. As part of the screening, they’ll be shooting a mass death scene that will wind up in one of their future classics.

June 16: Windows Scoreboard 9th Anniversary
The popular dive bar may be getting older, but it’s not growing up. For their anniversary party, they’re offering two hours of free flow drinks from 9-11pm. Ladies will enjoy free flow until 1am.

June 18-20: Omnivore Shanghai
Elite chefs from around the world converge onto Three on the Bund for the fourth edition for this celebration of fantastic food. The Commune Social’s Scott Melvin, Madison’s Austin Hu, Ultraviolet’s Paul Pairet and el Willy’s Willy Trullas Moreno are among the city’s standouts that will be dishing some of their secrets at intimate master classes. Globally renowned chefs Mathieu Viannay (Mère Brazier) and Hideaki Sato (Ta vie) team up for a fivecourse pop-up dinner on June 18. It’s a tough act to follow but Jowett Yu (Ho Lee Fook) and Thomas Lim (Goldie’s) will try on June 19. While their goalkeeper's coach and That's columnist Ian Walker may have lost his beard, the team is still in a pole position for an Asia Champions League spot and can reclaim they're stranglehold on the league with a few wins.

June 19: Swedish Showcase
Three of Sweden’s top indie acts team up for a show that will double as previews of each of their highly anticipated upcoming releases. The Deer Tracks specialize in primeval indie-pop. June 19-20: Beyond Time
Already an acclaimed actress in Taiwan, Liu Ruoyo found insipration to connect to China’s indigineous folk culture following a one-year stay studying under pioneering experimental director Jerzy Grotowski. Founded on Luquan Mountain in 1988, U-Theatre mixes traditional drum sounds with dances inspired by Taoism, meditation and martial arts. Developed over four years, Beyond Time is a 75-minute show that has already wowed crowds around the world. In addition to kicking off its first Mainland touring production, the show will also luanch the Oriental Legacy on Stage series at Shanghai Culture Square, which also includes Wu Hsingkuo’s Peking Opera adaptation of Waiting for Godot, Zhao Liang’s The Tea Spell and Edward Lam’s What is Sex? - a modernization of A Dream of the Red Chamber. June 30: Cotton Club’s 5,000th performance
Shanghai’s halcyon jazz age is written in the history books, but the city continues to thrive as one of the world’s elite jazz cities. Since opening in the 1990s, the Cotton Club has played a central role in the city’s music scene. They’re celebrating the incredible milestone of their 5,000th performance with a major blow out. Created by Melbourne based Grande Exhibitions, this multimedia celebration of Van Gogh has toured the world several times. Its Mainland debut is already a success with more than 120,000 tickets sold before its opening. Often praised as “The Godfather of the East,” Shanghai Bund revisits the influential Hong Kong television show that imprinted its portrayal of Republican-era Shanghai on a generation. The grand musical drama incorporates the latest in 3D holographic imaging technology and boasts an all-star international crew that includes Broadway choreographer Bob Richard (Oliver!), the godfather of South Korean musical dramas Kim Hyo-jung as art advisor and costumes by Hong Kong Film Awards winner Hai Chung-man. Performed in Mandarin with English, Japanese and Korean subtitles available, it’s the first major show by JDF whose ambition is for the show to become a perennial theatrical staple in the city.
