Every girl must, at least once or twice, have dreamed of being Alice – stepping into a world of unknowns and having a wonderful adventure there. Standing on the rear part of busy Beijing Lu, Goelia 225’s dazzling and diverse decor brings a little bit of magic to reality.

Goelia 225 is located in a traditional five-story ‘qilou’ building, erected in 1949. “An old building is a carrier of certain sentiments,” explains Manager Karmen Li. “Putting the shop here, in a building with stories, actually enriches Goelia.”

A striking orange façade conceals a tranquil interior. The ground floor has been transformed into a miniature French-style garden, with little trails, a stone pond, evergreen plants and a small wooden pavilion.

Spiral stairs to the upper stories are steep, but the discomfort of climbing is eased by the colorful illustration drawn on the wall. Titled ‘Get into the Galaxy,’ it depicts a fantastical journey around the universe.

A burst of floral fragrance greets one’s arrival on the second floor. A variety of seasonal blooms are displayed and sold here, from red roses and golden sunflowers to white calla lilies and baby-pink carnations.

Continue ascending and reach an area dedicated primarily to young female artists, famous and obscure. Every month, an exhibition that is either themed around women or curated by female artists is held here.

Gadgets and knick-knacks from around the world are on display on the fourth floor where, according to Li, visitors can experience Goelia’s brand culture: inspiration from travel.

Time for a rest? A small cafe inhabits the top of the building, offering not only cozy sofas, fresh juices and mellow coffee – both indoors and outdoors – but also second-hand books to read and trendy accessories to buy.
