Guangzhou has been widely recognized as the starting point of the original Maritime Silk Road, which flourished for centuries after first coming into being during the Han Dynasty. Proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping, the master plan of developing a 21st-century Maritime Silk Road and the deployment of the “One Belt and One Road” policy has become a key concern for Guangdong Province.
The project has drawn the cooperation of China Communications Construction Company Ltd. (CCCC) and Atkins Group, a UK enterprise with rich experience in urban and regional planning, design and execution. On November 12, the two partners signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement in Guangzhou.
Of the programs being discussed by the two groups, the Window of Canton has drawn the most attention. Lying on the extended line of the Pazhou International Conference and Convention Zone, along the No. 1 Consular Office Zone and No. 2 Consular Office Zone, the Window of Canton commercial complex is not only a landmark building on the southern end of the axis of Guangzhou, but also a potential major stop of the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road. The A District of the project was begun in August 2013 and is to be completed by December 2014.
Both CCCC and the Atkins Group believe the Window of Canton will drive Guangdong’s reform and opening up, as well as its transformation and upgrading. Outstanding enterprises, at home and abroad, are welcomed to make full use of the platform to help Guangzhou’s economy thrive.
