Sometimes we’re in the mood for casual eating at a simply decorated food stall. Other occasions call for an exquisitely furnished restaurant with delicately crafted tableware. Now, both experiences can be enjoyed under one roof: Blossoms 1928.

Situated in the north district of Mall of World, the florally named establishment is divided into two parts: outdoor snack bar and indoor fine dining restaurant. With cane chairs and wooden tables, the al fresco area mainly serves light lunch or afternoon tea. A variety of seasonal fresh fruits on display in the big ice locker encourages patrons to sample some of the vivifying juices (RMB13-18).

Entering the interior section, you may find yourself wondering if you’ve stepped into an ancient Western castle. Big crystal chandeliers dangle overhead, golden candelabra adorn each table, carefully folded napkins complement shiny eating utensils and glossy leather armchairs provide comfort seating. One could almost image that one is participating in a black-tie dinner at Downton Abbey.

And what are we being served at this most elite repast? An unusual array of exotic foods. Pan-fried udon with seafood (RMB35) is good for a light lunch. The Japanese noodle is a tricky ingredient to handle when fried; too much oil makes it greasy while not enough leaves it unpalatably sticky. In Blossoms 1928, the veteran chef cooks the udon just right: tender, smooth and chewy. With chopped squid, shrimp and crab meat, it seduces with layers of flavor.

Durian pizza (RMB52) is a must-order – and we realize how strange that sounds. On a crispy, moderately thin crust rests creamy fruit flesh and cheese. Baked golden brown, the pizza is not as pungent as one would expect from a dish utilizing the so-called ‘king of fruits.’ Instead, the aroma of cheese works surprisingly well with the durian, making the pizza a lip-smacking main course.

Every night, singers from Guangzhou and the Philippine are invited to give live performances, further romanticizing the ambiance. For ladies, there is an additional reason to like Blossoms 1928: second-hand luxury handbags are on auction every week in the restaurant. With discounts of up to 30 and 40 percent, who could say no to a monogrammed Louis Vuitton clutch?
