Sky Lounge launches the Party Pier scene into the echelons of the cosmopolitan. Run by the proprietors of Pearl River, Sky Lounge can be found sprawled atop the German eatery on the third and fourth floors. Open for less than two months it delivers a trendy slice of riverside glamour.
Once you’ve found yourself a perfect vista next to the Perspex barriers you can take comfort in the fact that Sky Lounge isn’t just a pretty space. The second generation of Guangzhou aren’t berthing their boats at Party Pier just for the scenery.
Behind the bar is Ivan Yuan, winner of the 2013 Barstylez World Flair Bartending Championship held in Hong Kong. Yuan won with his drink Kiwi Drip – a Le Fruit de Monin, apple juice, kiwi sour and white Bacardi rum concoction. The Hong Kong native enjoys using Spanish ingredients to create new types of cocktails. Even the bark used to create the smoke for certain drinks comes from España.
The Earl Grey caviar martini (RMB78) takes 15 minutes to prepare and is made to order each time. A double of white Bacardi, passion fruit, strawberry juice and lime juice, all blended with the probiotic Align, make up this molecular cocktail. Packed full of vitamins, it’s technically healthy – technically – with strawberry drops floating inside that look like fish roe.
Equally sweet, the KGB (Koyoko Grape Bath, RMB78) has passion fruit from Hong Kong, strawberries from Australia and is served in a miniature tub. It’s a precursor to going home for a bath (not necessary alone), with Beefeater gin, raspberry Chambord liquor and a plastic yellow duck on the side – definitely one for the fairer sex.
Cocktails at this party spot draw on all the colors of the rainbow. The fluorescent-blue Castle in the Sky (RMB78) with Skyy vodka and lime juice is topped off with liquid nitrogen, the idea being that the beverage is cooled without the drink being made watery. It’s presented in a teapot-shaped glass that won’t shatter from the minus-210 degrees Celsius chill.
As manager Wilson Yip points out, “you can eat, drink and smoke our cocktails.”
