An earthquake hit near the border of Guangxi and Guangdong provinces on Saturday night at approximately 10.55pm.
According to China Earthquake Networks Center, the seismic activity occurred in Guangxi’s Beiliu, a county-level city in Yulin. The earthquake’s depth was recorded at 10 kilometers deep, and was measured at a magnitude of 5.2. (An earlier report had assessed the earthquake as a 4.8-magnitude shake.)
Tremors were reportedly felt by residents in multiple cities in the area surrounding where the earthquake took place. A video posted by the Earthquake Networks Center showed thousands of high school students in Beiliu lined up on a sports field to evade the earthquake.

No injuries have been reported following Saturday’s earthquake. China Earthquake Networks Center’s official Weibo account posted footage from one Beiliu resident’s home surveillance camera, which revealed tremors lasting about two seconds, while another video showed movement lasting several seconds.
Shortly after the quake, a 22-year-old man from Pingnang county in Guangxi sent out a fake earthquake report on WeChat under the guise of China Earthquake Networks Center that claimed an earthquake would occur from 2.43-2.45am the next morning, and called on people to find an open space to evade it. Authorities quickly refuted the rumor, and tracked down the suspect, surnamed Tang, arresting him around 5am that same morning.
