Stores To Open Their Bathrooms to Public in Guangzhou

While China’s ‘Toilet Sharing’ app allows users to easily locate the nearest restroom, the Guangzhou government is doing even more to accommodate the weak bladders of the masses.

The City Management Bureau of Tianhe District announced on April 9 that there will be ‘society’ restrooms opening on a total of 21 streets in the district. Instead of building entirely new facilities, however, the bureau will be selecting two privately owned bathrooms on each of the 21 streets. They will include washrooms located inside restaurants, cafes, banks and other stores that face the main street.

Landlords who agree to make their restrooms available to the public will receive a subsidy of up to RMB3,000 (These subsidies will go into effect at the end of April). The soon-to-be public toilets will also be monitored by the city’s sanitation department, with hygiene inspections to be conducted at least twice a week, according to Southern Metropolis Daily. If any of the facilities fail inspection four times or receives a total of three complaints from users within a three-month period, the landlord may not be given a subsidy for that quarter.

These restrooms must also meet several conditions: they should be in good condition, they should be cleaned regularly, equipped with hand-sensor taps and come with free toilet paper and hand sanitizer (yes, you read that right). Once they become public facilities, these toilets will be open for at least eight hours daily.

Once opened, these public toilets will be labeled with a sign that says “OTG” (Opening Toilets of Guangzhou).
