Tue, Jan 15: While She Sleeps at Mao Livehouse

British independent band While She Sleeps bring their metallic hardcore tunes to Guangzhou this week. With sounds featuring heavily down-tuned guitars, thick bass tones, screamed vocals and fast-paced drumming, occasionally complimented by melodic guitar tones and piano interludes, their live show is a must-attend event for hardcore fans.

Jan 15-Feb 4: CNY Poon Choi at Grand Hyatt Guangzhou

Poon choi, literally ‘basin dish’ in English, is a traditional Cantonese dish that holds a variety of ingredients in a large wooden, metal or porcelain basin. Using premium ingredients, the culinary team at Grand Hyatt Guangzhou have crafted a sumptuous array of poon choi dishes to celebrate the arrival of the Year of the Pig. Ingredients utilized in the Grand Hyatt Guangzhou’s poon choi include sea cucumbers from Norway, fish maw from Indonesia, New Zealand deer tendon, mushrooms, wild abalones, oysters, roast goose, hand-made fish balls and prawns, among various other delicacies. Fri, Jan 18: C-Block at Mao Livehouse

Hailing from Changsha and rapping in the local dialect, C-Block have won over a crowd of younger fans with their insistent old-school style. Founded in 2007, the rap trio is one of the first batch of Chinese rappers who thrived in the country. Fans in Guangzhou can catch their live performance this week at Mao Livehouse.

Sat, Jan 19: Yo-Yo Ma at Youth Music Culture Guangdong

The Youth Music Culture Guangdong music festival at Xinghai Concert Hall will see internationally renowned musicians and conductors like Yo-Yo Ma and Michael Stern host public workshops, lectures, rehearsals and concerts. Ma will collaborate with young musicians at the opening concert of the music festival. Don’t miss this chance to see a musical master in action!

Until Jan 21: Color Lab

Color Lab is a synthesis of color and imagination, which offers 20 color-oriented installations for visitors to experience and, more importantly, take amazing photos with. From a pink restroom and golden toilet to an all-mirror dark room lit up with dangling light bulbs, these installations provide perfect spaces for taking that perfect Instagram selfie.

Until Jan 31: Casserole Delicacies at Ming Court

A selection of classic Cantonese casserole dishes created by Chef Chau are on offer at Ming Court until the end of the month. The casserole specialties menu features prized delicacies such as sea cucumber, abalone, fish maw and grouper, among other ingredients, which are prepared using time-honored methods. Highlighted dishes include poached fish maw in pumpkin soup, braised fresh turbot in a clay pot and braised assorted seafood and bean curd in a clay pot.

Until Jan 31: Cang Xin: Model of Energy

The works of Chinese artist Cang Xin are very conceptual, whether they are paintings or installations, and are associated with abstract concepts like ‘dark matter,’ ‘dark life’ and ‘dark consciousness.’ Performance art is another way through which Cang conveys these avant-garde concepts. Via the expression of body movements, which are inspired by the hunters and nomadic people of North China, Cang wants to raise public awareness of such topics as identity politics.

North Koreans were introduced to oil painting not too long ago, yet their painters have mastered the techniques, artistic characters and aesthetic language of oil painting. In general, their works are refreshing and natural, while the use of color reflects their unique appreciation of the art. From sceneries and landscapes to portraits and more, North Korean oil paintings never fail to offer audiences a sense of sweetness and tranquility.
