That's Guangzhou takes a look at the best gigs of the week.

Fri, Dec 28: Chestnut Bakery & Stranded Whale @ 191 Space

We've been awaiting Chestnut Bakery's return for a long time. Their 2015 album, Diaries, brought them national attention, as they combined softly spoken vocals with gentle dream pop, creating a sound not unlike Cigarettes After Sex. On the other side of the bill is Stranded Whale who have steadily become one of the more recognizable names coming from the Hong Kong indie scene at the moment. They've had a pretty great 2018 so far, dropping their second full length album, The Revival, while also claiming a spot at Clockenflap.

Fri Dec 28, 7.30pm; RMB80 presale, RMB100 at the door. 191 Space. See event listing. Tickets.

Fri, Dec 28: Wutiaoren @ Mao Livehouse

Chaoshan band Wutiaoren have had a busy year. While on the one hand they have dropped a new single, they have also been touring at home and abroad, having just returned from Brazil of all places. Their poetic folk music is a rarity in this part of the world, as they paint pictures with their words, their instruments and their zany willingness to experiment. A must see if you've got an evening to spare.

Fri Dec 28, 8pm; RMB120 presale, RMB150 at the door. Mao Livehouse. See event listing. Tickets.

Sat, Dec 29: From Your Balcony @ T:union

Having just released a new album, The Party, last month, French musician From Your Balcony arrives on the mainland for his second-ever China tour. Armed with delightfully relaxing acoustic indie music, and with a fondness for more caustic rhythms, From Your Balcony's musical palate is a trip. At times he has shades of Andrew Bird about him, while at others his more aggressive sound might put you in mind of Conor Oberst in his early Bright Eyes days.

Sat Dec 29, 8pm; RMB120 presale, RMB160 at the door. T:union. See event listing. Tickets.

Sat, Dec 29: Kuratani’s Farewell @ Brasston

Bringing together a foursome of like-minded DJs who collectively go by the name Soul Funk Jazz Brothers for one last evening before their Japanese compadre, Kuratani, returns to The Land of the Rising Sun, Brasston will host an evening of... you guessed it: soul, funk and jazz music.

Sat Dec 29, 9pm; free entry. Brasston. See event listing.

Mon, Dec 31: God Bless Punk @ SD Livehouse

There's not a venue that does punk music, and specifically punk festivals, quite like SD Livehouse. Here they bring in bands from local labels like Fing3, while also inviting Shenzhen-based bands like Mott to join in on the New Year's Eve festivities. Head down to Shayuan for what should be a sweaty, raucous good time this Monday.

Mon Dec 31, 8.30pm; RMB60 presale, RMB80 at the door. SD Livehouse. See event listing. Tickets.

Mon, Dec 31: Hoodoo NYE Party @ Floating Island Club

Spend your last night of 2018 gazing out over Guangzhou with the Hoodoo crew this Monday evening. Staging another of their thrilling parties, the folks at the popular local techno crew are paying homage to possibly the first cyberpunk movie ever made, and a classic of German expressionism to boot: Metropolis by Fritz Lang. While that movie's original soundtrack was made up of orchestral pieces, we always love hearing musical updates to cinematic classics (Nicolas Jaar's Pomegranates, anyone?)

Mon Dec 31, 8pm; free entry. Floating Island Club. See event listing.
