That's Guangzhou takes a look at the best gigs of the week.
Fri, Nov 30: Night Tempo @ SD Livehouse
One form of electronic music that has gotten overlooked of late has been the underrated and gentle vaporwave phenomenon. Korean artist Night Tempo arrives at SD Livehouse, bringing his trippy tunes to the Shayuan-based venue. Look out for soul influences and helium-like vocals on tracks like 'Jackson' and 'Love Again'.
Fri Nov 30, 11pm; RMB80 presale, RMB100 at the door. SD Livehouse. See event listing. Tickets.
Sat, Dec 1: Black Dream @ Brasston

As one of the foremost venues for old school soul and funk in Guangzhou, Brasston welcomes Black Dream for an evening of laid-back classics. Words used to describe this group of artists by the venue are pungent and poetic. Featuring DJ Sandy and DJ Tutu, you can catch a wide mix of nu disco, funk and city pop on the evening.
Sat Dec 1, 10pm; free. Brasston. See event listing.
Sun, Dec 2: Anna Farrow and Florent Brique Quartet @ Zhile Art Space
With a voice and vocal style that can do justice to such classics as ‘Feeling Good,’ Anna Farrow is joined by Florent Brique Quartet for an evening of slow jazz at Zhile Art Space this weekend. Get prepped for Guangzhou's jazz season with this great music show.
Sun Dec 2, 8pm; RMB100 presale, RMB120 at the door. Zhile Art Space. See event listing. Tickets.
Mon, Dec 3: Polyphia @ SD Livehouse
No matter the circumstances, avant garde is always a difficult label to live up to. This Texan instrumental band apparently see no reason to evade such categorization, however. With intricate and intense guitar licks and song titles like ‘James Franco,’ Polyphia are a welcome reprieve from the usual slew of instrumental rock bands that pass through, as they externalize their brash music via fast-paced rhythms.
Mon Dec 3, 8pm; RMB200 presale. SD Livehouse. See event listing. Tickets.
