Update (November 28 10.52am CST): The original article has been edited to state that only the Canton Tower light and music show has been suspended.
According to a post from Tianhe Public Security Bureau’s official Weibo account, the Canton Tower light and music show for the 2018 Guangzhou International Light Festival will be canceled tonight, November 27, and tomorrow, November 28. The announcement cited ‘massive crowds causing public safety concerns’ as the reason for the show’s abrupt suspension.
The Canton Tower light show is allegedly set to resume on November 29.
From the 29th onwards, visitors will be required to make a reservation to attend the Huacheng Plaza light show. Starting tomorrow morning, November 28, anyone interested in attending the event can follow Guangzhou International Light Festival’s (广州国际灯光节) WeChat account, and click ‘快预约,’ meaning ‘book an appointment.’

Potential bad news for expats: members from the That’s editorial team tried to reserve a spot using their passport number, but an error message appeared stating that it was not a valid ID number. For Chinese residents, every ID number can only reserve one time slot and you must bring your ID card in order to enter the event.

This is the second year in a row the event has been suspended due to ungodly crowds. On the second evening of the 2017 Guangzhou International Light Festival over half a million people showed up at Huacheng Square to view the light installations, causing authorities to shut down the event shortly after 7.30pm.
To the best of our knowledge, the other venues participating in this year’s GZ Light Fest (the several Guangzhou bridges that cross the Pearl River, Zhujiang New Town’s ‘connection corridors’ and a sub-venue in Huangpu District) will be operating as originally planned.
