'Project Jingle Bells' Brings Christmas to Homeless in Guangzhou

The Christmas season is widely known as a time to be grateful for what you have and to give back to others in need.

Project Jingle Bells, going on its fourth year in operation, is preparing to help the city’s homeless community in a major way. Their Christmas clothing and food drive provides the homeless with winter gear to stay warm, comfort food and holiday cheer.

Last year, the charity group helped over 600 homeless men and women throughout Guangzhou. But this year, the organizers are aiming to make this drive even better!

“Project jingle bells is part of a larger homeless group that meets every single Wednesday. The homeless especially look forward to the Christmas drop off as it means they will not only receive gifts but also can celebrate with festive singing and dancing. In previous years, it has been a really positive experience for everyone involved,” said Cathy O Sullivan, one of the organizers for this grassroots food and clothing drive.

So, how can you be apart of this growing tradition in Canton?

Project Jingle Bell is seeking volunteers to help distribute holiday care packages to the homeless in the area. They are also looking for donations of men’s winter clothing to help out those with no way of staying warm during the chilly nights. If you’ve got a car, you can be a major help as well. Know any hairdressers? Invite them along to help our city's homeless get a clean cut.

Really, at the end of the day, everyone is welcome to help out in anyway they can to ensure the less fortunate are looked after this holiday season. Any financial donations are also welcome in order to provide homeless folks with heat containing wraps, gloves, hats and small food items like eggs, instant noodles and milk.

Collections will be held on Friday November 30, Friday December 7 and Tuesday December 11 at Morgan's Public House from 5.30-7.30pm (right in time for happy hour!). Several additional drop off locations will also be confirmed at a later date.
