Domino's Pizza Opening Two Restaurants in Guangzhou

The chips have fallen in Guangzhou’s favor, for pizza lovers anyway: popular American pizza outlet Domino’s Pizza is opening not one but TWO restaurants in Haizhu District.

The first will open later this month inside Yocity Mall on Jiangnanxi Lu. The second Domino’s will be located a 15-minute walk away, inside Jiaxin Business Center, which is between Shayuan and Fenghuang Xincun metro stations and a short stroll from Taigucang Wharf

When the second pizza shop will open is not entirely clear, but staff at the Jiangnanxi Domino’s told us it would be ‘shortly’ after the first restaurant opens in Yocity Mall on November 23. We stopped by Jiaxin Business Center last night and can confirm construction on Guangzhou’s second Domino’s Pizza is underway.

Upon discovering Domino’s grand plans for a Guangzhou expansion, we reached out to our colleagues at That’s Shanghai to find out what pizza lovers in Canton can expect. The consensus was that Domino’s in Shanghai is “similar” to the chain’s American shops, although the quality is lower.

One colleague mentioned she stopped patronizing the brand after “they replaced the cheesy crust with the disgusting Chinese sausage crust.” She added, “it was the worst thing ever.” (We can confirm cheesy crust has since returned!).

A quick browse of the digital menu available on Domino’s China website reveals a number of classic American pies as well as some unique offerings that are clearly catering to the local market (cuttlefish flavored sausage and octopus pizza, anyone?).

We should note that another pizza shop had been operating (and possibly still is, they didn’t answer our calls) under the name Domino’s Pizza in Liwan District for at least the past few years, although we’ve been assured by staff at the Jiangnanxi Domino’s that the Liwan copycat is in no way connected to the famous American brand.
