If you spend any time at all walking around town with your eyes off your phone screen, you are bound to see posters and banners denouncing the smuggling and use of drugs. But it’s not just these not-so-subtle reminders that have played a role in fighting crime throughout the Middle Kingdom.
In January, the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the State Council announced a nationwide effort to combat organized crime. The campaign’s slogan, which translates to “sweep away black and eliminate crime,” has yielded positive results thus far. The number of detainments from January to September has been staggering, with prosecutors detaining 57,000 people suspected of participating in some form of organized crime. Out of those detained, 32,000 were prosecuted for criminal charges.

In Guangdong province, customs officers have seen an uptick in drug smuggling cases, with eight suspects detained in the past three months for transporting drugs into China with the use of their body.
On Tuesday, Zheng Jun, deputy director of Guangzhou Customs’ anti-smuggling bureau, held a press conference in Guangzhou stating that 6.6 kilograms of drugs were seized by customs officers from those eight suspects.
Over that same three month period, customs officers in Guangzhou have intercepted a total of 59.5 kilograms of smuggled drugs, detaining 19 suspects.
Zheng also noted that this was the first instance where customs officers seized methamphetamines from a human drug smuggler. According to Ecns.cn, the drug mule swallowed six bags of the deadly narcotic to assist a drug gang in bringing their product to the Chinese mainland.
