Aug 30-Sept 16: Cats

Cats is one of the longest-running shows in West End and Broadway history. Since its premiere, it has been presented in over 30 countries, translated into 15 languages and seen by over 73 million people worldwide. With "timeless music, spectacular sets and a superb cast" (Daily Mirror), breathtaking choreography and of course the unforgettable song 'Memory,' it is a magical musical like no other.

Thu, Aug 30: US China Trivia Night

Come to the Consulate General of the US in Guangzhou to test your knowledge of America and learn some new fun facts about geography, history, celebrities, movies and music – with Chinese-American characteristics. Form a team with your friends or join a team when you arrive. Each team, limited to a maximum of seven people, will receive blank answer sheets on which to write the answers to each question, which will be read and displayed in both Chinese and English. At the end of each round, the organizer will collect the answer sheets and score them. Once trivia finishes, the teams with the highest scores will win a prize. Doors will close at 7pm sharp, so don’t be late! Note: the US Consulate in Guangzhou doesn’t allow laptops on the premises.

Thu, Aug 30: Mouse on the Keys at Mao Livehouse 


One of the most unique and unclassifiable bands to come out of Japan's instrumental scene. Mouse on the Keys deal in a mix of jazz, post-rock, R&B and electronic music. They are also known for their visceral live shows with stark, intense visuals. Catch them live at Mao Livehouse this week.

Fri-Sun, Aug 31-Sept 2: Singularity Festival

Guangzhou’s biggest art festival, Singularity Festival, is coming back for its second run this September, with organizers expecting to exhibit works by 80 artists both domestic and foreign. Since their first festival last year, founders ETH, Walka Ng, Tony Cheung and Li Mengyu have opened their own gallery and studio – Singularity Gallery – on Jiangtai Lu, and branded both their venue and event under an overarching organization called Singularity Plan.

Fri, Aug 31: Game Six at Mao Livehouse

Mao Livehouse is preparing to unleash an electronic tornado this weekend, having organized a gig that features six talented artists: DJ Kino Beats, who hails from Jamaica; the famed Bohan Phoenix, whose EP Jala received critical acclaim last year; sound wizard Lil Akin, a member of China’s Kazakh minority; local hip hopper and DJ EDI;  Qingdao-based DJ and producer Groovemiki; and Jashtice, from Hohhot, Inner Mongolia.

Sat-Sun, Sept 1-2: Tailor Made by The Train Theater 

One day, a tailor receives a note: "Your mission is to sew a coat by midnight. The size does not matter, but it must fit perfectly." Come join in the magical adventure of the tailor and discover for whom the coat was made. Winner of Israel's Interdisciplinary Play of the Year and Puppet & Prop Design Award for Children's Theater 2014, the play has been performed worldwide.

Until Sept 24: Mandarin Oriental Mooncakes

Mandarin Oriental, Guangzhou is proudly launching a scrumptious collection of mooncakes for this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival. Priced at RMB288 per box, the hotel’s four-piece mooncake set boasts Cantonese-style crust pastries with three flavors of stuffing. For RMB588 per box, you can snatch a six-piece set, which comes with traditional mooncakes and a select bottle of wine. Like previous years, there will also be a selection of limited edition chocolate mooncakes, which are handmade by the hotel’s dessert chef and priced at RMB368 for four. Until Sept 24: Mid-Autumn Artistry at The Ritz-Carlton

The Ritz-Carlton, Guangzhou, in partnership with Xiaochuang Art Studio, presents exquisitely designed mooncake gift boxes to celebrate this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival. The dessert packaging is inspired by the vibrant jewelry collection Maritime Silk Road, which is designed by Zhang Xiaochuang, an artist and jewelry designer from Guangzhou. The blue boxes are meant to symbolize the sea and to present the message that “the moon shines bright over the sea, and we share the same moment regardless of where you are.” Prices start from RMB268.
