Thu, Aug 2: Forests

Forests hold a special position in Taiwan’s indie rock scene: they're one of the few bands on the island that insist on singing in English. Though young, all three members are experienced rockers whose melancholy sound has captured the attention of a considerable fanbase; check them out for yourself this week.

Thu-Fri, Aug 2-3: War and Peace

St. Petersburg-based Mariinsky Theatre is to stage the epic and majestic opera War and Peace at the Guangzhou Opera House. Based on Tolstoy’s well-acclaimed novel, the two-act opera by composer Sergei Prokofiev boasts nearly 70 solo roles and dazzling choral content. Come for the superb cast that mixes new and experienced singers, or to brush up on your Russian.

Sat, Aug 4: Zapata’s Beach Party

Beach parties at Zapata’s are back this Saturday to celebrate the Mexican eatery’s anniversary. Ladies showing up in beachwear will be treated to a free margarita in addition to being entered into the running for a RMB1,000 voucher. If you're looking for a place to chill and get free stuff, ladies, mark your calendars.

The folks behind Zhile Art Space have moved to a new, larger venue, where they're currently presenting a series of oil painting workshops on different styles from the 20th century. Indulge in Alfresco’s specialized homemade pastas with fresh ingredients delivered daily from local markets. Signature pastas include Pappardella with a five-spice duck leg ragu, as well as homemade potato gnocchi paired with cheesy, creamy truffles. The promotion is available throughout August, in conjunction with live demonstrations by pizza acrobat/world-renowned chef Pasqualino Barbasso.

A collection of artwork by Australian painter Justin Ole Fischer (JOF) is on display at Blue Seaweed, an artsy cafe in Dongshankou. The Australian artist, poet and designer is the executive curator of Art Canton, an international-grade art exhibition.
