That's PRD takes a look at the best live performances happening this weekend in Guangzhou:
Fri, Jul 6: E321 @ SD Livehouse
Swedish trio E321 fuse elements of shoegaze and post-rock to create dreamy, ambiguous songs that hearken back to the Scandinavian countryside of their younger years. The recent release of their new single, ‘Eyes Wide,’ is their first musical output since 2015, and this China tour represents a huge step forward for the young band.
Fri Jul 6, 8.30pm; RMB80 presale, RMB100 at the door. SD Livehouse. See event listing. Tickets.
Sat, Jul 7: DouDou @ T:union
Xi'an rapper DouDou started writing trap-inspired hip hop tracks back in 2016. In the interim, fans of the sometimes beleaguered rap genre have seen their fortunes rise and fall. DouDou brings with him a bunch of friends for an evening which should highlight some of the disparate strands of rap that have begun to flourish in China, such as the Sichuan style of Powerman and local Guangdong artist DLyn.
Sat Jul 7, 8.30pm; RMB120 presale, RMB150 at the door. T:union. See event listing. Tickets.
Sat, Jul 7: HooDoo @ Floating Island Club
Local techno event organizers HooDoo are back with another 12-hour all-nighter, this time on the 54th floor of China Plaza, featuring young techno whizz Black Potion all the way from Beijing. Tribal John and his partner Rampton formed HooDoo four years ago in an effort to spread the word about old school techno, and they have since cemented their label as one of the most recognized names in Guangdong’s electronic scene.
Sat Jul 7, 8pm; free entry. Floating Island Club. See event listing.
Sat, Jul 7: TotalFat @ Mao Livehouse
Japanese pop punk band TotalFat draw inspiration for their high-octane music from a mutual love of skateboarding culture. Already on the verge of turning 20 years old, TotalFat remain one of the most popular punk bands in Japan. Fans of Japanese anime may recognize their music from the sensational TV program Naruto Shippuden.
Sat Jul 7, 8pm; RMB280 presale, RMB80 at the door. Mao Livehouse. See event listing. Tickets.
