With the theme ‘Hyperconnected Museums: New Approaches, New Publics,’ tens of thousands of museums around the world are celebrating International Museum Day today, May 18.
Guangzhou has joined this worldwide event and will extend the hours of operation for nine of its museums from 6.30-8.30pm, according to GRT Radio.
These include the Kui Yuan Gallery, Guangdong Museum of Herbal Tea, Guangzhou Museum, Guangzhou Uprising Memorial Hall, Zhujiang-InBev International Beer Museum, Guangdong Revolutionary History Musuem, Museum of the Mausoleum of the Nanyue King and Memorial Musuem of Xinhai Revolution.
With the spooky theme ‘Exploring the Tomb in Darkness,’ the Nanyue King’s mausoleum will be open to nighttime visitors for the first time in 30 years, according to GD Today. There will be VR and quiz games, shadow plays and even a lantern workshop for guests.
Besides these museums in Guangzhou, Guangdong province has several other distinctive museums participating in International Museum Day.
For those into more salacious exhibits, Shaoguan’s Chinese Sexual Culture Museum might arouse some interest. It has more than 2,500 exhibits concerning ancient Chinese sex culture with six exhibition rooms that discuss ancient sex education and erotic art, among other juicy topics.
For a shorter drive out of Guangzhou, you can visit Foshan’s Shiwan Ceramics Museum. There you can experience ceramics culture and pottery painting. Better yet, try getting hands on and take a stab at making your own pottery to take home with you.
