The body of a Kenyan student who went missing on May 4 has been found in Guangzhou.

Ezra Lei Kipngetich, a student at the city’s South China University of Technology, had not been seen for two days when his family, with the help of local law enforcement, managed to locate his remains.

A relative of the deceased told That’s that, by reviewing surveillance camera footage with police, they were able to follow Kipngetich’s final steps and eventually recover his body from the Pearl River.

Police in the subdistrict where South China University of Technology is located have declined to comment about the case, though family members say the cause of his death continues to be under investigation.

Officials at South China University of Technology told That’s they are also looking into the circumstances surrounding Kipnegetich’s disappearance but were unable to give details about the case.

The Embassy of Kenya in Beijing told That’s they were unaware of the death of a Kenyan national in Guangdong in recent days but that their consular services are always willing to offer support and guidance to grieving families or citizens in crisis.

Kipngetich’s friends and relatives are raising funds for the repatriation of his remains to Kenya – a costly prospect in China, where a combination of bureaucratic red tape and logistical hurdles can push expenses into the tens of thousands.
