Three cities in the Pearl River Delta recently ranked among the planet's top 50 most innovative cities, at least according to a report released at the China (Shanghai) International Technology Fair last week.
Hong Kong beat out both Shenzhen (#33) and Guangzhou (#41), earning a solid 18th spot on the ranking of 100 metropolises.
Beijing was named the world's ninth most innovative city, while Shanghai came out just ahead of Hong Kong at 17th place.
San Francisco-San Jose, New York and London ranked first, second and third, respectively.
The study examined 160 cities around the world and rated them in categories ranging from scientific research to technology development to number of universities, Global Times reports.
In total, eight Chinese cities made the top 100 list:
Beijing: 9
Shanghai: 17
Hong Kong: 18
Shenzhen: 33
Guangzhou: 41
Hangzhou: 77
Tianjin: 91
