A video has emerged of a Foshan man emerging triumphant from a bout of aquatic combat with a reptilian foe late last month.

The encounter occurred in a rural area of Shunde county, according to Foshan Public Broadcast. Residents of a riverside village reported hearing loud thrashing sounds coming from a murky local waterway for three nights running.

When the source of the nocturnal commotion was revealed to be a freshwater crocodile, Mr. Chen, a local sanitation worker and volunteer member of the village safety committee, decided to take matters into his own hands.

Video footage of the event shows Chen gliding into battle on a small rowboat, crewed by two intrepid companions. Within half an hour, the small squad was able to wrestle the powerful creature to shore using their bare hands, whereupon they discovered the animal’s jaws had been sealed shut with black tape.

China Daily reports the crocodile weighed over 25 kilograms and had grown to a length of more than 1.6 meters.

While it is not known how the exotic creature entered the waterway, locals speculate that it either escaped while being raised for food at a nearby hotel or restaurant, or was deliberately released after being kept as a pet.

Regardless of the animal’s provenance, it has since been transferred by authorities to a wildlife conservation center in the area.
