Remember Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly in her pearls and black dress, devouring a store-bought Danish and coffee out of a paper bag, while gazing longingly at the window of Tiffany’s? Had she lived in Guangzhou a few decades later, she wouldn’t have had to bring her own breakfast. She could have walked into Superlove dressed in all her glory, gazed into those identical jewel boxes and promptly ordered a cappuccino and pastry instead.
Superlove has recently garnered a whole lot of attention for its striking blue and marble decor. To be more specific, the hue that dominates the sweetshop’s color scheme is Tiffany Blue, a shade so synonymous with covetous dainties that it’s literally trademarked. There are Tiffany Blue leather chairs, Tiffany Blue cake boxes, blue trim accenting the shop’s marble walls. But instead of displaying dazzling gems, Superlove’s glass jewel cases showcase decadent, sweet desserts and savories, including signature whole and sliced cakes (from red velvet to cheesecake), ice cream, handmade pastries, pralines, chocolates, macarons and baked goods like croissants, sandwiches, donuts and cookies.
From fondant to cream, Superlove appears to have filled a niche. It looks pricey, and frankly, it is for a cafe. A tiramisu cup will set you back RMB78, but it does manage to lusciously hit the spot. Drinks can’t be counted as economical either: a hot latte is RMB38, a fresh orange juice costs RMB48, and teas are priced at RMB48/pot. Alcohol makes a guest appearance too: wines by the bottle from RMB388 to 5,880 and mojitos at RMB55.
Ready for the sweet stuff? The English high tea set (RMB298) is a layered spread of six sugary items and four savory, perfect for an indulgent party of two. But the piece de resistance is the Superlove afternoon tea (RMB398), a whimsical, smoke-filled experience wherein taste and aesthetic combine in a flavorful flight of fancy. Sweets hang from a glass-blown base in terrarium-like structures and small metal pails, creating a decadent tableau that will please the eye as much as the palate.
Though Superlove’s desserts surely shine, little can be said about their more substantial meal options. The spaghetti bolognese (RMB58) is not notable, unless you haven’t eaten in the last few days and just need a tummy filler. The other two pasta mains are similarly unworthy of commendation; the seafood and tomato pasta (RMB98) is overcooked and bland, while the truffle creamy pasta (RMB88) appears to be free of truffles, as well as taste. It is fairly obvious that one ought not come to this sugary sanctuary to indulge in anything savory. Stick to the sweets, and indulge instead in a sea of Tiffany Blue selfies.
