Oldie but Goodie is a monthly column where we feature noteworthy restaurants, cafes or bars that have been open at least six months and are worth a try.
Lovers of craft beer will find that once-elusive ales and stouts are increasingly easy to find in China. Guangzhou, like other major cities, has seen an explosion of establishments serving up independent brews – from the glitzy and chic to the humble and off-beat.
Beerbox’s Jiangpan Huating branch, a small, uniquely decorated bar with innumerable craft suds from around the world concealed in its cozy depths, can definitely be counted among the latter. It may look like a quirky one-off, but in fact, Beerbox has three separate locations throughout Haizhu District, all overlooking the Pearl River.
The drink-stop’s modus operandi is immediately apparent upon entering its malty halls. A wall stacked top-to-bottom with a cascading range of bottled treats dominates the intimate space. Tough Luck and Goose IPA from the US, Delirium out of Belgium and China’s own Ant Brew are a few of many choice tipples represented on this illustrious ‘wall of fame’.
The decor and waterfront location are more reminiscent of a beach-side bar than an inner city tavern. The ceiling is hung with garlands of emerald leaves, while the front of the bar is open to the evening air.
Their food menu might not be as expansive as the drink selection but the beef options are juicy and tender, while the chicken wings provide a bit more crunch and kick.
Service at Beerbox is also wonderfully attentive. Staff welcome visitors with eager greetings and, given the bar’s ample seating options, you’ll have your pick of places to perch.
