Looking to leave town for Chinese New Year? You aren’t alone. According to a statistic published today by GRT Radio, Guangdong is expected to transport an estimated 136 million people during the Spring Festival travel rush, otherwise known as chunyun.
According to GRT Radio, the statistic was released by the province’s ‘chunyun bureau.’
For some perspective, 136 million people is double the number of UK inhabitants and slightly more than the populations of both Mexico and Japan (127.5 million and 127 million, respectively), according to World Bank stats.
Chunyun is the world's largest annual human migration and this year’s travel rush is projected to run from February 1 until March 12.
Last year during chunyun, over 100,000 vacationers stood outside the Guangzhou Railway Station in Yuexiu District after their trains were delayed (and it didn’t look like a good time, to be brutally honest).
If the idea of traveling with over 100 million other holidayers hasn't deterred you from hitting the road or rail, we recommend scooping your tickets quick. Chinese New Year 2018 train tickets are on sale now, click here for more info.
