Jan 13: Cicada @ T:union
If you're a fan of a good string section, or just keen on beautiful music, then this concert is perfect for you. Taiwan-based band Cicada formed in 2009 and they’ve since become synonymous with the sound of China’s Taiwan, with their frequent classical crossover efforts vividly describing the landscape of their home island. Cicada is currently undertaking a six-date China tour that will see the group visit Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Shanghai and Hangzhou, amongst others, in support of their most recent album, November’s Where Did You All Go?
Jan 13, 8.30pm; RMB100 presale, RMB120 at the door. T:union. Tickets.
Jan 13: Wutiaoren @ Mao Livehouse
For all of you fans of South-Chinese culture, Wutiaoren are a folk band taking influence from their Teochew roots in Haifeng, Guangdong. Their music consists of such pungent instruments as the accordion and harmonica and makes use of the local, native vocabulary of the Teochew culture – with the resultant effort sounding strangely similar to American gypsy punk band Gogol Bordello. Herein lies their originality, as Wutiaoren capture a piece of culture that not many ever get to see or hear about. For a totally original evening, catch them at Mao Livehouse on Saturday.
Jan 13, 8.30pm; RMB100 presale, RMB120 at the door, RMB450 VIP. Mao Livehouse. Tickets.
Jan 14: Hedgehog @ Mao Livehouse
Hedgehog are an indie band possessed of an illustrious history, similar to other Beijing acts Carsick Cars and Snapline. Part of the first generation of indie rockers to break through at hallowed underground club D-22 back in the previous decade, Hedgehog remain relevant, stylish and most important of all, hard-hitting. While it’s been a couple of years since their previous release, 2018 has seen the band launch a new single, 'The Train Sailed to the Clouds, A Dream of Nine Clouds'. Quite the name, eh? Catch them on Sunday at Mao Livehouse.
Jan 14, 8pm; RMB 120 early bird, RMB130 presale, RMB150 at the door. Mao Livehouse. Tickets.
