Popular Haizhu-based music venue SD Livehouse has shuttered its doors until March 19, 2018, the supposed result of a violent confrontation between performers.
The venue announced the closure via their official Weibo account on December 21. Below is a excerpt from the notice:
“Following notice from the relevant authorities, SD Livehouse will suspend operations from December 21, 2017 to March 19, 2018 while carrying out internal reorganization. The reason is as follows: a recent incident took place on the premises that involved a physical altercation between performing artists. This [the incident] has resulted in a civil legal dispute and brought a stop to performances.
This is in order to be in compliance with producing a site that is in accordance with the establishment of a harmonious society. Also to cooperate with the relevant authorities' necessary duties, and to expedite a just solution and a just punishment in accordance with the law.”
The venue’s phone number, as listed on their WeChat public account, is currently out of service. An alternate phone number was posted on the venue’s Weibo page for customers seeking refunds, but no further information as to the cause for closure was given.
According to local rapper ODDope, the closure is the result of a clash between local acts Whizzbiz and Chiken Pest at SD Livehouse’s hip hop night on November 24.
That’s previously reported on the incident, which saw police visit the venue after being called by Whizzbiz. Upon arrival, authorities ushered guests out of the venue, leaving many music fans confused and angry at the unforeseen drama, while others simply stood outside taking pictures of the police van’s flashing lights.
At the time, SD Livehouse Performance Manager Mac_T told That’s: “For this artist [Whizzbiz] we will publish his actions and let the nation's live music venues pay attention to this man.”
Recent performances at the venue (including another hip hop night set for New Year’s Day) were moved to other livehouses around the city.
SD Livehouse is one of several livehouses in Guangzhou, along with NT Livehouse, T:union, Mao Livehouse and 191 Space.
