Planning is currently underway for a second international airport in Guangzhou, according to local media.
The structure will reportedly be called Guangzhou Zhengguo International Airport and will be located in the city’s outlying Zengcheng District, slightly over an hour’s drive away from Zhujiang New Town (without traffic, of course).
Canton is currently served by Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, located in Baiyun and Huadu districts, 28 kilometers from the city center and roughly a 40- or 45-minute drive in ideal conditions.
Baiyun Airport is the central hub of China Southern Airlines and a Shenzhen Airlines ‘focus city.’ Over 55 million passengers traveled through the airport in 2015 according to the Civil Aviation Administration of China, making it the 17th busiest airport globally for passenger traffic that year.
To help transport people to the planned Zhengguo airport, new high-speed metro lines (reaching a maximum speed of 200 kilometers per hour) will be constructed. One of the new lines, which has yet to be numbered, will be able to move commuters between Zengcheng District’s Knowledge City and the international airport in 15 minutes.
Another line will transport passengers to Knowledge City from Guangzhou East Station in just 12 minutes.
