Police Shut Down Hip-Hop Show in Guangzhou After Fight Between Artists

A good ol' fashion hip-hop battle broke out in Haizhu District last Friday night, November 24, as an argument between two well-known local musicians turned violent at SD Livehouse

Guangzhou rappers Chiken Pest and Whizzbiz carried their mutual distaste for each other from the recording studio to the stage for 'Botao Xiongyong,' a hip-hop-themed night at the Shayuan venue.

The performances were initially delayed due to Whizzbiz’s late arrival. When the ill-fated concert finally kicked off, Chiken Pest mounted the stage with a bellyful of anger over a recent artistic transaction gone wrong.

Chiken Pest, best known for their unique comedic hip-hop, publicly dissed Whizzbiz and, when their set was finished, an argument broke out back stage, where, we are told, punches were thrown before other acts stepped in to cool tensions.

According to fellow performer ODDope, Chiken Pest had paid Whizzbiz money to help produce some of their songs, a promise that was never fulfilled. Chiken Pest elaborated on ODDope’s comments, telling us that they had wasted hours in Whizzbiz’s studio recording beats that resulted in nothing.

In reaction to the heated conflict, Whizzbiz called the police, who arrived and immediately began ushering the audience outside. Some revelers left confused and angry at the unforeseen drama, while others simply stood outside taking pictures of the police van’s flashing lights.

Of Whizzbiz’s bad behavior, SD Livehouse Performance Manager Mac_T stated: “For this artist we will publish his actions and let the nation's live music venues pay attention to this man.”

Hip-hop and rap music is a growing beast in China, as seen with last year’s hugely popular TV program The Rap of China (basically X Factor for Chinese rap music.) Such major Chinese cities as Beijing, Shanghai and Chengdu (home of crossover act the Higher Brothers) have seen a significant boom in hip-hop culture in recent years.
