Techno Mainstays to Perform in Shenzhen This Weekend

In the age of sync buttons and pre-prepared sets, DJ performances have seen a noticeable loss in energy on dance floors around the world.

As techno music becomes slower and softer, and the skills required to DJ progressively easier, a backlash from the electronic music world has led to a renaissance in live performance. Artists eager to reinvigorate the DJ experience are leading the charge with raw live performances that fuel the dance floor.

Underground techno outfit Hoodoo will showcase two such artists – Project Soda and Biting Eye – this Saturday, November 18, at Club Sector. Both will utilize a dizzying array of equipment, drum machines and synthesizers to put on a rad show.

Project Soda is the pseudonym of Arne Venema, a Hong Kong-based filmmaker known for the TV ads he's made for Chinese audiences. Since turning his attention back to music production, his releases via Acid Chicken have brought international acclaim. His live performances, though, have generated even more excitement.

Project Soda’s music is defined by driving bass lines and pounding percussion overlaid by transfixing harmonies. Fans of Detroit techno and UK rave pioneers such as Orbital will find a lot to love in Project Soda's work.

Local music fans may be familiar with Acid Chicken’s label boss, Biting Eye, who has repeatedly hopped the border to perform in Shenzhen over several years now.

Purple Key and Tribal John, also from Hoodoo, will hit the decks as supporting DJs.

With such pros at the decks, this concert promises to be the standout gig in Guangdong this week for techno enthusiasts.
