Here are all the movies to catch in Chinese theaters this November.
Now Playing: Thor: Ragnarok
With an aesthetic quality no doubt derived from fellow Marvel franchise Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor: Ragnarok dazzled critics with its quippy dialogue and well-written story. This third installment finds Thor imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his iconic hammer. His task is anything but simple: free himself, take back his hammer, and stop the evil Hela from destroying his home world, Asgard. Oh, but first he has to fight Hulk. Chris Hemsworth reprises his role at Thor, but with a killer new hairdo alongside his frenemy/brother Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston, and fellow Avengers — Doctor Strange, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, and the Hulk, portrayed by Mark Ruffalo. Beloved comic book character Valkyrie also makes her MCU debut, played by Tessa Thompson. Idris Elba, Cate Blanchett, Anthony Hopkins and Carl Urban also star.
Now Playing: Blade Runner 2049
The sequel to the cult classic film Blade Runner surprised both critics and audiences with its masterful storytelling and visual aesthetic. It's been praised as a worthy follow-up to the original, but despite the good reviews, Blade Runner 2049 has bombed at the box office in both the US and China. The Denis Villeneuve-directed movie stars Ryan Gosling, Jared Leto, Ana De Armas and, of course, Harrison Ford.
Now Playing: Geostorm
This film comes a few years too late after the natural disaster movie trend of the mid-2000s. Gerard Butler stars as a satellite designer who is tasked with averting a world-wide catastrophe when Earth's climate control satellites malfunction. It has a whopping 15 percent grade on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences and critics alike were underwhelmed by the film.
November 10: Murder on the Orient Express
Murder on the Orient Express is one of Agatha Christie’s most famous novels, featuring iconic detective Hercule Poirot. Kenneth Branagh directs and stars as Poirot in this sumptuous, slightly campy film adaptation, sporting his best Belgian accent and the most dramatic silver mustache ever depicted onscreen. Penelope Cruz, Johnny Depp, Daisy Ridley and Judy Dench also play some of the passengers Poirot suspects of having committed murder on a luxurious train trip across Europe. Scheduled for a simultaneous release with the US, this film marks the fourth time in which Christie’s novel has been adapted for the screen since it was published in 1934.
November 17: Justice League
Also scheduled for a simultaneous release with the US on Nov 17, Justice League is the latest celebrity-packed superhero blockbuster and the fifth installment in the DC Extended Universe. The film picks up after the tragic events at the end of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (no spoilers, though if you watch the Justice League trailer you’ll get some), and you'll see Wonder Woman (Gal Godot) and Batman (Ben Affleck) assemble a team of ‘metahumans’ including the Flash (Ezra Miller) and Aquaman (Jason Momoa) to take down Steppenwolf (Ciarán Hinds), an immortal from the nightmarish plant of Apokolips who leads an army of parademons. Amy Adams, J.K. Simmons, Diane Lane, Billy Crudup and William Dafoe also star.
