Brake failure is responsible for the out of control bus that ploughed into pedestrians yesterday afternoon in Guangzhou's Yuexiu District, according to the Guangzhou Public Security Bureau.

The shocking accident occurred at around 12.30pm yesterday (October 26) at Wanling Square and left two dead and four injured. Police and medical personnel responded, detaining the 57-year-old bus driver and transporting the wounded to hospital.

According to a followup Weibo post on the Guangzhou Public Security Bureau’s official account, brake failure is believed to be the reason behind the runaway vehicle. The post also states that neither drugs nor alcohol were in the driver’s system, according to a preliminary test carried out at the accident scene.

The PSB’s Weibo post additionally states the bus, route 194, was empty at the time of the accident.
