Earlier this month, the Guangzhou Metro denied reports that subway security checks would be upgraded by October 1, stating at the time that a timeline for security upgrades had not been established. Today, according to a GRT Radio report, it has been officially announced that the new security checks will begin on October 10.
The new security procedures will require both passengers and their baggage to undergo an X-ray scan, much the same as airport security.
Unfortunately for impatient commuters, the comprehensive checks are expected to increase wait times by up to 15 minutes – which means catching a train at Zhujiang New Town Station is going to suck during peak hours.
Only six stations will be affected by the new security measures to start: Zhujiang New Town, Tianhe Coach Terminal, Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, Guangzhou Railway Station, Gongyuanquian and Xiajiao.
On October 15 the trial will expand to include 14 additional stations: Donghu, Wangshengwei, Kengkou, Jiaokou, Dongshankou, Guangzhou East Railway, Tiyu Xilu, Sanyuanli, Guangzhou South Railway, Xiaobei, Tuanyida Square, Haizhu Square, Airport South and Canton Tower.
By November 30, all stations will have the new security equipment implemented, according to a Guangzhou Metro press release.
The new tech and additional manpower is intended to prevent firearms, ammunition and explosives, as well as flammable, radioactive, toxic and corrosive goods, from finding their way onto Guangzhou's metro transit system.
