“Chinese people are really good. Baiyun drivers are really good,” a Vietnamese tourist identified as Mai is quoted as saying in Mandarin after her lost handbag was returned to her. Inside said bag? Her passport, flight ticket and RMB10,000 in cash.
According to an article carried by Tencent News, the tourist’s handbag was left in a Baiyun Group cab at around 2pm on September 3. Mai was traveling to the Garden Hotel, her accommodation while in town, to prepare for her midnight flight out of Guangzhou.
A short time after she returned to her hotel room, Mai realized she had left her handbag in the taxi. When she alerted the hotel’s staff, they suggested she report the lost bag to Baiyun Group.

Meanwhile, the taxi driver, named Tang Jianning, noticed the pink purse in the back of his vehicle. He pulled over, retrieved the bag and opened it. What he found inside reportedly astounded him: a large stack of RMB100 notes rested alongside a passport and flight ticket.
What happened next may surprise those of our readers accustomed to reading about dodgy, unscrupulous cabbies: the driver contacted a Baiyun Group operator to report the case before delivering the handbag to the taxi company.
At around 6pm, four hours after Mai left her bag in Tang’s cab, she retrieved her purse with its contents undisturbed.
So, what can we learn from this story? As shockingly unethical as Guangzhou’s late-night cabbies can be, there are drivers who deliver.
