On September 2, a woman in the prefecture-level city of Yunfu, in Guangdong province, gave birth to a healthy baby on the side of the road while out shopping.

Video of the infant’s arrival has generated considerable online chatter and shows the baby literally drop out of the mother onto the ground. Passersby promptly came to the woman’s aid, scrounging up a couple of chairs and some cardboard.

Medical personnel were called to attended the scene and, upon arriving, pronounced the newborn was healthy and had no complications at birth.

After receiving medical treatment, the woman strolled down the road, carrying both her little bundle of joy and a bag full of groceries. Watch the miracle of roadside childbirth below (VPN off):

Sadly, according to Guangdong Television, the woman began suffering from mental illness two years ago, shortly after which she disappeared. Her family had not seen or heard from her since.

After the woman wandered away from the site of the roadside birth, police were alerted and were able to locate the woman and transport her to a local hospital.

The woman’s family was contacted by authorities and made the trip to Guangdong from Hubei to care for the woman and the newborn child. We wish the new mother and her baby the very best and hope they get the care they need.

Fun fact: the name of the city the birth occured in, Yunfu, and the Chinese word for pregnant women, yunfu, are the same, although they differ in tone.
