September 5: EVHO

Formed in 2008 in New York, EVHO is a four piece retro-funk band with a passion for 70s and modern-day rock music. Their sound is influenced by groups like The Mars Volta and King Crimson.

September 7: Trivia at Hooley’s Irish Pub

Head to Hooley’s this Thursday to indulge in a wide range of questions and stand the chance to win some delightful (read: boozy) prizes, which are awarded to the top three trivia teams. Hang around after to enjoy live music.

September 8-10: Aida by Giuseppe Verdi

This week, Guangzhou Opera House will stage Italian opera composer Giuseppe Verdi’s stately, world-renowned opera Aida. Set in Egypt, the four-act opera was first performed in Cairo in 1871 and has held an influential position in the operatic scene ever since. This version, led by Italian opera director Franco Zeffirelli (a distant relative of Leonardo da Vinci), has been applauded by European heads of state.

September 8-10: Singularity Festival

Singularity Festival is an art festival brand dedicated to promoting illustration, zine, photography, video and music, and will showcase some interesting examples of these art forms. Visitors are able to purchase art at the festival.

September 8-10: Party Pier American Craft Beer and Food Festival

Passionate about American food and beer? Then attending this three-day festival is an absolute must! Set to begin this Friday, Party Pier’s American Craft Beer and Food Festival will offer a selection of US-brewed craft beer and delicious edibles, as well as suds served by a number of Guangzhou’s best breweries.

September 9: Leech

Swiss post-rock band Leech came into being in 1995 and was likened to Canadian band Godspeed You! Black Emperor and English band Mogwai. They are one of the pioneers of post-rock and have inspired many a post-rock band. Catch them live at T:union this week.

September 9: Love and Run

This running contest is designed for couples only, challenging lovebirds to finish a 5-kilometer track with games in between. Winners will go home with a prize of RMB2,000 and a coupon for wedding gowns valued at RMB10,000. Tickets include t-shirts, snacks and drinks.

September 10: Guangzhou 40km

Starting at the south gate of Huolu Mountain Forest Park, Guangzhou 40km challenge participants hike through a 40-kilometer track that cover parts of the forest park, Fenghuan Mountain and Longdong Reservoir. Divided into three groups – experience (11 kilometers), halfway (24 kilometers) and whole course (40 kilometers) – this challenge, limited to a total of 600 hikers aged from 18-60, suits participants of various fitness levels. The registration price includes hiking clothes, a map, medical support and insurance, among other services. For more information, add GZ100 on WeChat.
