Guangzhou’s buses have a cockroach problem. We know this for two reasons: first, we regularly ride the city’s extensive bus system and have seen them countless times, and second, Tencent News drew attention to the problem just last week.
The Tencent report, published on July 26, recounts the experience of a Guangzhou resident surnamed Deng who encountered a group of cockroaches on the No. 75 bus in Haizhu District.
Deng, frightened by the sight of a dozen roaches snacking on food waste on the floor of the bus, exited the vehicle after just one stop.
From our own experience, we have seen roaches on BRT buses B2, B2A, B5 and the B21 and the No. 10 bus, which travels through Yuexiu to Haizhu.
That’s reached out to the Guangzhou Yiqi Bus company for comment, who relayed us to 12345, a hotline run by the Civil Affairs Department. A staffer on the other side of the line told us they are aware of the problem and that they would investigate our complaint of roaches on the above-mentioned bus routes soon.
In the meantime, for anyone previously on the fence about utilizing Guangzhou's public bus system, we'll bet a cockroach infestation might just be enough to keep you on the metro.
