Vertical Marathon events have become all the rage in China, with regular skyscraper-conquering races held in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. A fad for the young, the passionate and the fashionable, running up seemingly endless numbers of staircases is the newest ‘it thing’ in the world of endurance racing.
Back on July 9, the International Vertical Marathon held a ‘fluorescent night run’ in Guangzhou R&F New World Center, which saw 600 runners dash up the 233-meter-tall building in fluorescent garbs.
On August 6, in celebration of National Fitness Day, runners from across the Pearl River Delta are invited to run up OneLink Walk, which is located in Tianhe. The building has 50 floors and stands 222 meters in height.
The event will also feature a ‘bubble run’ portion, in which two big bubble machines will blast participants with wet, slippery bubbles. We know what you are thinking (‘that sounds dangerous before running up 50 floors’) and we can report that organizers will have a ‘drying area’ for runners before they begin their ascent up OneLink Walk.
The winner will receive RMB800, while the top three finishers will be given a limited-edition pair of ‘graffiti running shoes.’
