At a press conference on June 23, Zhongshan police announced that they'd made their biggest local drug raid of the year just two weeks ago, arresting four men and seizing 66 kilograms of crystal meth, in addition to RMB1.6 million in drug money.

In May of this year, a tip led Zhongshan police to discover that a 50-year-old man, surnamed Xie, was using his alcohol business as cover for drug trafficking.

Around two weeks of investigation revealed that Xie and an associate, surnamed Yao, worked together to buy, sell and ship drugs en masse. The two would normally first visit Shanwei, Guangdong, to buy their goods. Then they'd take their purchases back to Tanzhou town, in Zhongshan, to package and smuggle them out to other provinces.

On June 14, upon learning Xie and Yao were heading out to Shanwei the next day, police decided to act.

At 6am the next morning, officers stopped two sedans on the highway to Tanzhou. Xie and Yao, along with three others, were found onboard, as well as 66 kilograms of crystal meth and RMB100,000.

Another group of police simultaneously raided an apartment complex in Tanzhou, uncovering another suspect, surnamed Peng, and more than RMB1.5 million in drug money.

Xie, Yao, Peng and another man surnamed Qiu are still being detained by police, who are looking into the case.

News of the Zhongshan raid comes not long after police in Guangzhou revealed that they'd arrested 19 people, 11 of whom were foreigners, for trafficking marijuana. Both they and the suspects in Zhongshan may face a grim reckoning for their crimes, as drug dealers are regularly executed in China.
