'We Try It' is a regular series where we try the latest off-beat food and beverage offerings.
Last week we sampled McDonald’s second attempt at Michelin burgers and, while browsing the take-out menu, were surprised to notice the fast food chain had also rolled out a new chicken option: maple syrup-flavored wings.
Our interest was immediately piqued, and today, while engaging in the questionable life choice of ordering McDonald’s take-out for lunch, we placed an order for the seemingly Canadian-inspired McWings.
Costing RMB11, the wings arrived in our office in a white paper bag that looked better suited to be an airplane barf-bag.
It seemed like an ominous sign. By comparison, our last McDonald’s order came in these slick, sexy boxes:
Inside the McBarf Bag we were a little bummed to find only two wings. Still, we can report that they were pretty damn tasty. Quality of the meat aside, the chicken possesses a hint of mapley goodness that hits a sweet spot in between ‘holy sh*t, this is one sugary wing’ and ‘it tastes like a normal wing, this is as big of a gimmick as Coca Cola’s ginger soda.’
The only thing that would make the maple syrup wings better (aside from having them home-cooked by someone who knows what they are doing) would be a light drizzling of Sriracha. Although we didn’t give this a try, we imagine the fragrant maple flavor would contrast well with the zesty smack Sriracha is famous for.
The final verdict: 4/5 Stars
