Students from The British School of Guangzhou, a Nord Anglia Education school, have showcased their STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and maths) skills to MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) researchers, professors and students at the annual MIT- Nord Anglia STEAMFest.

The British School of Guangzhou’s students have joined 104 students from 25 Nord Anglia Education schools globally for a programme designed by MIT and Nord Anglia Education experts. Working with professors and researchers from the university, students are taking part in innovative hands-on workshops in bioengineering, robotics, coding, music production, gaming and virtual reality.

Mr Mark Thomas, Principal of The British School of Guangzhou said, “The STEAM Festival has proven to be a once in a lifetime opportunity for six of our BSG students. They have returned to GZ highly motivated and talking ecstatically about their experiences. There is no doubt that they have gained confidence and knowledge from their visit to this world-renowned university. The Festival is just the beginning of the collaboration with MIT. We are looking forward to future opportunities for BSG’s staff and students as we develop our bespoke MIT/NAE curriculum.”

The five-day event, exclusive to Nord Anglia Education students, is a celebration of STEAM subjects bringing students closer to the latest innovations in these fields at MIT. The British School of Guangzhou’s students participate in activities designed by MIT experts to build their understanding of STEAM through real-world application. Some of the activities include learning about the latest discoveries in cancer research to engineering a device to deliver drugs to tumour cells. Students will also visit MIT and Harvard to get a taste of student life at these prestigious universities.

“Before this trip to the STEAMfest at MIT, I'd never quite understood the importance of being part of the Nord Anglia community. But this trip has given me so much. Friendship, socialising skills, confidence, a glance in to life at university; and a sudden ambition to work harder to become someone like the amazing and inspiring people I've met throughout the trip such as the Harvard students, MIT lecturers and graduates," said Sabrina Chu, The British School of Guangzhou. "Nord Anglia seems to have expanded our school beyond its brick walls and granted me access to things some people wouldn't experience in a lifetime. Thank you to all the organisers, leaders and planners behind this trip because it has truly been one of the best experiences in my life so far.”

“We are so delighted to give our students this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience STEAM subjects with the best in the world at MIT. Without a doubt, our students will benefit from what they learn at MIT for years to come,” said Mark Orrow-Whiting, Director of Curriculum and Student Performance.

The MIT-Nord Anglia STEAMFest is one of the unique international experiences offered by Nord Anglia Education schools. Students from the group’s 44 schools around the world learn together every day through online, in-school and worldwide experiences designed to nurture key transferable skills. Nord Anglia encourages students to be ambitious and set their sights higher by fostering a global perspective throughout their learning.
